@Richie

That's damn good. How can we even compete? ;)

Practice, take a break, practice and think about feeling the ball :p. Rinse and repeat.
I had a lot of attempts where I only did 1 - 5 or the ball would go all over the place, then I had a few attempts where I'd go quite far, then a few where it was 1-5 etc. Then this attempt which was the best one and another where I did around 30ish.

We have a sand bagger.

This doesn't sound good.. :(

I don't use enough emoticons - it's purely jest and respect for the control and balance. I was just waking up (that's my excuse for hitting the ball all over the place) but still...

I'll take it as a complement then, appreciate it. And in my defense I am quite good at and love learning these little skill things and being able to manipulate the ball well. If you've read my post in the second passions thread you can see how it is quite similar to this ;). I also hit the ball all over the place constantly but then you get these occasional attempts where you're super focused and in control.

I'd also like to say that while it improves ball control (just like my other passion would do with football/soccer) it's still different from learning other techniques or playing. It's like the bouncing the ball on the end of the bat thing. It's feels impossible at first, but if you practice a bit, take a break, sleep then it will suddenly become a lot easier.

Yes. I want to expose people to the power of practice thing. What you said at the end is the exact truth. It just gets easier if you put a little time into it. Most people give up because of early frustration and never get good at it.

Definitely different but this specific skill has some correlation to being able to control incoming spin with a push if you can read it. Now you mention it, I do remember you are a specialist at this sort of thing. So at least, it might give others more of a challenge.

If I wanted to be sadistic and give people a truly useless drill, this would have been it, though a table would be necessary:

I agree that it helps. There's a book (you might've heard of it already) by an ex pro table tennis player Matthew Syed who wrote a book called Bounce - the myth of talent and the power of practice. I really recommend it to anyone who's into sport and it tackles that exact issue.

I'm glad you didn't set that drill as the challenge, I've tried it before and it is very frustrating!

Bounce is a good book - I think he overstated the myth of talent part, and for people who think talent exists but really needed to hear the power of practice part, he could have been a bit more balanced. But I agree, it is a good read.

All ten did roll back into the net, but some of them rolled off the side after hitting it. So I'm saying this is no good.

I did learn a lot from doing this. Specifically that my point of contact on the ball is very inconsistent.

I think as the judge, I accept this - only one or two were really border line.

Ha ha. I just didn't want to give people stuff that I couldn't reasonably do. I was going to make the competition mostly finding shots in a video, but then I decided (partly motivated by your comments) that I could give people stuff that helps them with their table tennis. This drill helped my touch a lot, especially when I try to keep the spin bounce as low as possible, helped with pushing spin.
I found when I was trying to keep the spin bounce low, it lost more and more spin. Eventually the ball would hardly bounce and I would have to spin it hard to get it up again.

pancakes completed btw. sleep and then trying again worked perfectly. uploading to yt now. also richie yours are very controlled, well done, almost like you've done this before :(

I'll get on a table tonight to complete the roll backs.

Thanks, I can assure you I've never practiced spinning it like that on both sides before today. I'm always messing around with the ball before my games though, like spinning it in my fingers and stuff so I tend to pick stuff like this up quickly :). Like I said I had a lot of terrible attempts, then I took a break, continue, another break then I had a nice controlled streak like the one I posted :p.

I'd also say yours look pretty controlled for the most part

The breaks really make a world of difference, first develop the right feeling, then let the muscles relax, then go back and boom, easy. These were my first attempts after waking up and it was way easier. Can you do the spinning of the ball then landing in finger tips? I've tried quite a bit and couldn't, then I tried to just hold it on my fingertips and I couldn't even hold the ball there haha.

Yes. Keeping it low is more about keeping it at a consistent height with touch and control. That is how you borrow the incoming spin on a ball to push short - you have to stretch the topsheet mostly and not hit too hard into the wood.

Exactly :) and yeah, I did it at the end of the video :p. I first tried that ages ago and gave up actually, then I tried it again a few months ago and just kept trying to catch it there then eventually it clicked. It's quite a nice feeling getting the feedback of the spin and the sound of it.
It was the same for me, first try to just hold it there. Then try to get some spin but not loads, try to catch it. Then just keep increasing the spin until you can load it as much as you want and still be able to catch it.
