Tell you what, ITTF needs to introduce a protocol for umpires and players when a let/fault serve is called. Clear signs from the umpire signalling the type of let would help, and they need to teach both players and umpires the same signs. What happens right now is some players hardly speak any English and you can see them completely bewildered with the explanations they receive. Or sometimes a player wouldn't even look at the umpire and if they do, the conversation is usually terribly awkward and you can tell that the players have no idea what they did wrong.

HKTTA put in a proposal some years ago with the hand signs all filmed and photographed. It's been implemented for local tournaments to great effect. Doesn't matter if you're illiterate or deaf, so long as you're not blind. Zero ambiguity.

It looks like it has been implemented for international competitions since 2016.

Fan Zhendong vs Koki Niwa, second set, the net ball that Koki Niwa misses at 2:2 (from 2'16 to 2'19 in the video above). I don't know if the guy sitting on the japanese bench is taking a nap, clueless about how Niwa's brain works or just a plain moron, but he completely missed the time out.
