Changing rubbers to change technique.

My problem is that on the backhand, especially wide backhand, i often do passive shots such as block, half-punch and chop block. This often has a negative outcome such as it doesn't go on or they hit a good shot.

So my solution is to switch from dignics 05, which allows me to do these lazy shots, to dignics 09c, which doesn't. When i tried 09c on the backhand, these 'lazy' shots often completely failed, forcing me to move more. 09c also has a lot more benefits, such as more spin on drives and loops and better counters.

Do you think that it is a valid tactic to change rubber in order to play better? Ir do you think it will mess up my technique too much?

I think its a good idea to look at something else to Dignics 05 on the bh if you are struggling.
Its easier to use that T05 but still a beast to master, of which I know I cant.

I tried D80 on BH, in training felt good - in matches just to hard to use/not having the skills to use it. D09c is just as expensive - so wont save you anything there. But i think its a lot more forgiving and allows you to be more proactive with your strokes than the other Dignics rubbers. That said will take a good while to get used too as you just cant do lazy blocks with it.

Sounds like your problem has more to do with your movement then your rubber. You've already said that the lazy shots are the problem so just try and get these shots out of your game and you won't have to change rubber.
I already bought it😂. Yeah i know i need to work on my footwork especially around bh side. The fact that my lazy shots didn't work with 09c is just a plus, i just wanted to know if this is a viable move.

I often buy rubbers and blades, only to stick to a outer carbon combined with DNA pro M on the backhand.
From viscaria type to now Carbonado 45 series.

Most of the issues people complain about concerning equipment, is lack of propper technique. About 99% of all forum members are at best high intermediate.
Buying expensive equipment for our hobby is fun, so just enjoy it without giving reason🙂👍

Is that you..... NDH?

This is the most out of body experience I've ever had.

Same blade, same rubbers, same issues....

I've been where you are, and continue to be in the same position.

I'm currently trialing my new blade from SDC which is an Ovtcharov clone (a little slower).

I'm telling myself the same thing.... The slower blade will force me to play more aggressive shots, and not rely so much on blocks and punches.

The reality? Unless I improve my fitness, footwork, aggressiveness and overall attacking consistency, it won't really change.

So to answer your question..... If you are prepared to work at lots of other aspects of your game, then yes, D09C could be a good switch.

If you don't, then you'll just have the same issues with a rubber that is slightly less optimal for those situations.

I am interested in this approach, but for me when I am looking for more forgiveness on BH I lean toward softer but less bouncy rubbers such as C1 or Aurus soft, Eve FXP etc rather than harder less bouncy rubbers which, for me at least, kill any opportunity to develop speed and pace of the BH. I found 09c and Bluestar A1 to be very unforgiving if stroke technique wasn't optimal.

It's a 100% valid approach. It isn't without risk though just like anything in TT.

Story: Kristian Karlsson changed to Hurricane for a while as a developing player to work on his forehand. The challenge with changing is that sometimes, habits are developed that may not translate. So you need to have a vision of how you want to play and play that way.

I think we both live in a similiar area of England as well😂😂. Yeah i always end up doing these half-punches, more like an agressive directional block, which works ok, but against heavy or no spin it doesn't. I think 09c will help me develop the proper stroke in game.

Yeah this is what i want. I want 09c to be less forgiving so that my lazy shots that i keep doing don't go on, and i end up developing a better stroke and move better.

Yeah thanks! I know all the risks, the major one being the price tag of Dignics😂.

I also want to put out that to everyone that i don't expect my backhand to magically be amazing over night after i play with 09c. I know that it might take weeks to fully correct my laziness onthe backhand. I don't want anyone to think that when i play with 09c i will become Fen Zhendong😂

No one improves on performance just by changing rubbers.

But when performance improves, players usually change or upgrade the rubbers.
You've obviously never tried switching to pips on the backhand. Instant 200 point upgrade in my case until I figured out my natural tendencies is to attack and pips takes more energy to continuously be on the offensive and if I improved my backhands service receive, inverted would be better for me.

I've been itching to try small pips on backhand. Just as an experiment. I don't think i will permanently switch though.

I went the opposite direction (09c to 05) and my game became a lot more aggressive. Short push with D05 is a pain (although I've improved a lot in terms of momentum stopping since I switched) so my default serve receive became a lot more aggressive (chiquita / FH flick / sideswipe followed by aggressive topspin from both wings). If anything, I think 09c allows a much more lazier push based game.

Anyway, it is not about the rubber but more of the mindset imo.

Do you think that chaquita is easier with 05? I find that all spin-ups are much easier with 09c.

05 is way better for chiquita due to its increased speed and lower spin sensitivity imo

First of all, when you want to use rubber like D05, your technique should be already on decent level. Using this rubber for learning without coach, or knowlage is a way to develop bad habits.
I have a good technique, i just don't use it when the ball is hit wide or when I'm playing badly. Me and my coach are trying to work on it by doing footwork drills amd trying to anticipate wide balls.

I use D09C bh and Chinese tacky rubber fh, because it doesn't let me to get lazy. I need to play active, confidently using a proper technique and full stokes. When I use springy tensors, I tend to be lazy, and I play like a pussy.
