Weird to have a timeout right after winning a point, he actually broke his own momentum
The timeout was correct regardless. The most important time to use a timeout is when you think your concentration is drifting, sometimes because you are tired or tense. That he didn't win the point is not the best way to judge it, and having used it, he could now forget about it and focus on the match.

I actually think Ander Lind did not give himself enough credit in the post game interview. He said he won because of odd tempo and strange spins and that he would lose rallies. He was correct that his high spin returns did win him many points and sometimes made WCQ look bad. However, Anders also won lots of rallies and hit many super fast backhands.

Yes, memory is not always the best analyzer of the match. But usually how you think about what made you competitive influences how you view the whole game. It is maybe when he rewatches the match he might see what you saw but even then, his story is more likely the one that disturbed Wang as well and dropped his overall play to get everything working.

Hirano vs Kim Na Yeong
2-0 up, 7-3 in the third game.
Kim chases to 7-6 to force a timeout.
Hirano gets matchpoint at 10-9 but loses the game 11-13.

Hirano's forehand is all over the place for the first half of the game. Catches up but it's a little too late.
2-2 now

2-3 Kim Na Yeong.
Has KNT figured JNT/Hirano? They've had their sights set on Japan since Tokyo.
The farcical selection system that put fairness above all else has done irreparable harm now. The psychological barrier built up by this gen in the past decade has been nullified by JTTA's own hand and the confidence is being eaten away.

LA 2028 Cycle
China Smash 2024
R32 Hirano 2-3 Kim Nayeong
WTT CS Macao 2024
R16 Ito 0-3 Joo Cheonhui
WTT CT Almaty 2024
R16 Kihara 1-3 Yoo Siwoo

Paris 2024 Cycle
WTT CS Incheon 2024
R16 Ito 2-3 JJH
WTT SCT Ljubljana 2024
QF Kihara 2-3 SYB
R16 Nagasaki 1-3 SYB

I'm not talking about the historical aspect of South Korea here, which I've touched on multiple times over the years [1, 2, 3, 4]. I'm referring to the selection system. Yoo Namkyu got himself in hot water in the Tokyo 2020 cycle with his "infinite competition [1, 2]" and by now Miyazaki has done the same for the Paris 2024 cycle. The KNT under Joo Sehyuk (MT headcoach) and Oh Kwanghun (WT headcoach) are no doubt back on track in terms of harmony after a shaky start [1, 2, 3, 4].

In 2 years from now, Matsushima would probably win his match against Truls today, imo.
Obviously, Truls played better in the end, but I think Sora got thrown off by his attitude and the pressure.
His screaming, laughing at his serve and entering the 5th set after losing from 9-9 in the 4th.

His level dropped and went down 4-11.

Don't want to take credit away from Truls, but I think the last set showed their difference.

I think you are giving your pet narrative too much credit and Oh Kwanghun too little. Injury might have played a role, and she was still 2-0, 7-3 up before losing.

Ahem, look up his name and practically all the posts are by me. The ones made after his return to KOR are lost over at MyTT. I've been mentioning him when he was still unknown.

p.s. Look what happened last time when I raised the prospect of injury.

Sore losers, Anders won fair and square.
LOL these WCQ fans are something else. I like the idea of a crisper W968, but now I'm kinda afraid of getting a Q968 for fearing of being associated with them. Maybe at least it'll come down in price soon? 🤭

I love the way he described using the Gauzy approach to Xu Xin 100% - just spin every ball heavy and hope he has problems with it.
Good analogy. In Xu Xin's case, Xu's most effective weapon was his spin play and Gauzy out-spun him in that game.
Wang's main strength is his overaggressive and efficient first three shorts(serve, receive and third ball attack), Lind happens to be strong in that department and he used it more effectively in this game.

in summery, the strategy is called 'beat your opponents in their own games.

With that said, Both Xu Xin and WCQ are far superior to Gauzy and Lind. They won't allow the upset to repeat. It's true in Xu's case as Gauzy have never beaten Xu again since the upset. The same case will be true to WCQ as well.

MS R32
WCQ 1-3 Lind (-11, 9, -6, -7)

WCQ after Paris 2024: R32
WCQ after China Smash 2024: R32^2
Macao loss to LSD should also be added to his loss column.
WCQ seems like a player who is unable to make a quick short recovery. He goes through period of playing hot followed by a period of being cold. These periods typically span several months.
