I didn't play in the hidden serve era. I have a love hate relationship with the pendulum serve as well. I took me a long time to start accepting that I should be contacting the ball over my left hip.

I'm thinking you mean right hip? Not sure though.

This is a sensitive game, especially for us part timers. We form habits based on limited practice hours and probably even more on match play. IF you are taking a long term view towards improvement, it's best to do what you want to do better even if it costs you matches. The time spent doing things that don't contribute counts and you end up wondering why that short serve never gets more precise and lower under pressure (it may be technical, but it may also be because you spent the time you could have spent using it to beat players with other serves). Of course, if you are not training and are playing largely for fun, doing whatever you enjoy is best. Long serves do fit some games by the way but playing opponent specific table tennis is not going to get you far unless the plays you use are plays that you can give a basis in your overall growth.

2 of my non-TT instructors teach "The 3 F's" (Fit, Fun, Functional) ... in the context of TT, the first 2 F's are key. In my TT playing, I find I have a lot of Fun playing, which helps me get Fit. My instructors point out that if the physical activity one does is not Fun, no matter how Fit or Functional it makes one, one may not continue it as it's not Fun.

At this stage of my playing, I have no desire to compete in a tournament. So, if I'm spending my time on TT for Fitness and Fun, I may as well look to Improve also. Keeps me at it. Along the way, I meet up with Friends and hopefully can present them a better Challenge and hope my game improves their game.

"Iron sharpens iron."

I generally serve all my serves in my repetoire ... if i find one is a weakness for my partner... i will serve it a tad more not to win the match, but to help my partner improve. I mentioned in one of my previous AAR's that i always lose to a modern penholder at my club... played him 4x or so so far. He eats my side-top pendulum serve 90% of the time. One night after a match, despite language barrier, I showed him how to return it... since that time, we only had a chance to play each 1x... maybe next time, i'm just going to serve to him and see if he doesn't mind not playing a match and practice serve return.

Iron sharpens iron. We are all in this together.

Thank you NL for your reply ... provides more focus in my unretirement!

Good catch. Yes, right hip.

And that is one of the things you are doing so well in those serves. Contact is at a great place.

As far as I'm concerned, if 4-5 serves out of 9+ min of serving practice and 100s of serves are blocked from this view, then that totally doesn't concern me.

It's true, if you can't see it from here, you would have to adjust for a lefty. But that is easy enough. And the contact is where you ideally want it.

As far as the arm, to me it looks like it gets out of the way fast enough and I can see you are serving but not setting for the third ball as you would in a match. So, I would assume that you would move to ready and the arm would be out of your way even faster in a match situation. But, I don't know. Maybe the arm doesn't seem to me to be in the way but it is. That can be worked on pretty easily.

Good morning TTD Chit Chatters!

Felt in a funk all weekend ... partly cos my droid smartphone is still being repaired... after system software upgrade, it's stuck in a reboot loop. Googled and YouTubed, and couldn't fix it myself. Went to neighborhood shop to have it fixed.

In a funk, also partly due to yesterday's date... having been right there 15 yrs ago. Reflecting on Life and Luck.

Hoping to pick up my phone after work and get some TT in...

One of my mantras:

"Progress, not perfection."
~Denzel Washington as Robert McCall in 2014's The Equalizer

Looking for incremental improvements in my Mind telling my Body to move for 3rd ball looping ... to that end, today, i will only serve side-down.

Have a great day TTDers!!

~osph

Osph: I play funk. On my bassguitars! It's one of the few things I enjoy more than TT..

As far as life-mantras goes, ive found a new one. Its from the movie bridge of spies.

Tom Hanks character James Donovan: You don't seem worried?

Marc Rylance's (love!) character Rudolf Abel, facing the deathpenalty: - Would it help?

... That reply will stick with med for the rest of my life... Im always stressed out over unimportant shit. This helps me keep my mind where it needs to be.. and keeps me looking on the bright side of life.

Thats why I joind a new TT-club today. :)
Wish me luck!

Woah I missed a lot today, I'll get to reading in a bit. Arch, I know the serve you're talking about. It's not bad in some situations. Works well on players that are too close to the table and don't move in and out very well. They kind of get jammed up, usually against backspin they have that upward stroke to loop it right? So now that the ball is deep and going to bounce high, they're forced to hit the ball on the rise instead of its peak or fall.

That kind of ball won't work anymore at a moderate level.

But then again, there are outliers among players. Some high level players that will lose to a WEIRD, almost junk-like tactic that wouldn't work on anyone else out there.

How do players use long pimp to vary between a heavy backspin chop and a no spin chop when they receive a loop?
And as their opponent, how do you tell when they are doing a backspin chop vs a no spin chop?
Thanks

CTR + A saves grief, but TTD has an autosave feature, so you go back to the thread, click on the reply once more, you should see a "Restore Auto Saved" link.

What is this wizardry in which you speak.... I want this RESTOAR OUTO SAVEING function.

But seriously... I've never been able to restore my lost novel's, and thus abandoned threads because of that.
