A little while ago, I mentioned about a new exercise that I have incorporated into my warm-up routine, that is, the perculiar SHIKKO aka SUMO Leg lift exercise. This is a very good drill to train for explosiveness in the lower body.

Now,I have incorporated another drill. Instead of the usual BH to BH exchange that keeps one planted in one spot during warm-up, I will alternate at the BH side of the table, BH first then pivot for FH drives. This is a fast / quick drill to get your legs to wake-up.

After doing this drill, somehow I feel my legs move better and not so planted anymore. The usual on the same spot BH to BH drill will make one planted and it can develop bad habit of not moving. Agree?

Try it. Your legs will never get planted anymore, hopefully.

I have practiced I think twice now since the season ended. Lots of life stuff in the way, injury etc.

My old training partner Nicky has been back over the summer. Finally a reunion. He hasn't practiced at all during his studies so he was a bit rusty at the start, but we soon enough got some nice rallies going as usual.

I thought I was going to be rusty, but I played well.. maybe it's the lack of expectations. Also, I did an around the net, which barely bounced on the table. Nicky is the around the net master of us, I don't do it much in matches.. but this one was something else, shame it wasn't caught on camera. But our other training partner caught one rally.

I realized this session I really miss playing TT. Damn it's a good stress relief.

Yikes my other training partner trashed me today using his new heavy underspin/no spin serves. That is a really anti chiquita serve as it gets. No sidespin to borrow, and I can only do weak ass chiquitas which all got punished or defended easily. I was forced to push using this horrible pushing combo and was constantly on the backfoot ugh because of pushing too long or too high or a combination of it. He was always able to attack first and his BH down the line is really deadly towards me now :(

Never felt so helpless during serve receive as I did just now.

don't you completely avoid the backspin/no spin by doing Chiquita contacting the side of the ball?

Short answer is no - you still have to overcome the backspin with the upper body. Contacting the side definitely helps but when the backspin is so high (ball pretty much is starting to go back) you have to lift it a lot during the chiquita. And if you lift too much against no spin or less underspin then you pretty much will lift it out of the table. I have problems judging the amount of underspin too.

Now you gave me an idea - I should just do the chiquita that produces side underspin lol :))))

But really I think it's time to work on my pushing touch with this bouncy af setup. It can't be that terrible.

Tbh I think Dignics 09c which Boll used is much better at pushing, 05 is just plain bad in the short push. It's amazing how Harimoto makes it look easy.

I think I will have to focus more on the quality and control of the deep fast push.

i was kidding but i have played with tenergy 05 for a long time … so pushing short with dignics is not that impossible after all it is less bouncy … just a combination of reading the spin and getting the timing right , the window is small I agree but can be done . and pushing long and heavy is a treat … i do it with a open paddle in serve receives and it seems to work for m e with most of the times the opponent underestimating the amount of spin … so I would encourage in giving both an honest shot !

Coming from Hurricane (my prev FH rubber) it is very different! Hurricane is so, so easy to create very high quality short and long pushes in comparison. I guess it's not impossible with Dignics 05, I just need to work a bit more on the control, and spin reading. I mostly deal with sidespin oriented services which are much easier to read and chiquita. I think high quality pure heavy underspin / no spin serves is quite a different kettle of fish.

The founder of the club decided to help me out by giving me some exercises to help improve my fitness for table tennis! He used to be a coach for many years.
Things include skipping, sit ups, push ups, squats, side steps, burpes, box jump, and others..

He said to start slow, so he showed me how to do it, then got me to do it, and wrote a number next to each. He will check on me again in 1 month time to see the progress and adjust the numbers.

He said the aim is to improve my fitness and strength which will help me.

I am excited but also bit scared of doing the additional work as I am also gyming.
But I am also feeling committed to improving my level.. as I have another state wide comp in 1.5 months.

This is a great idea and will work wonders for your game long term … just make sure to take ample rest before your tournament and don’t show up all tight and sore .

Thanks ttmonster!

Yeah this one will be tougher, as this is in the city which means more strong players will be joining.. and I will have to drive back on the last day (2nd day) of the comp.

Btw, my highlight video for my last comp is coming soon. :D Stay tuned.

use some recovery tricks … stretching , rolling on foam roller , massage gun etc …. whatever works for you and you will be fine … sometimes we just underestimate the role of leg freshness in our playing levels .. I am playing 5 days a week 1-2 hours these days just for workout … days when i take a rest and come back with fresh legs I play at least 200 points higher if not more

Played today against my combination penholder friend and won a lot less today than last time where I was about equal - I think I was sluggish physically and was struggling to keep up to his speed and variations, playing half the time against inverted and half the time against long pips is just tiring af and almost unfair 😂. I pretty much had to rely on my serve tricks like crazy to get all the games I did lol. But there's a few good takeaways - I finally discovered how to do a Lin Yun Ju style down the line "bottle challenge" serve, both sideunder and sidetopspin, with the same preparatory movement as my diagonal serve. It is actually highly effective, so effective that in one game he gave up trying to loop it and just used his long pips to chop it which gave me more opportunities in the next few balls. I was skeptical about this particular long fast serve placement but turned out that once I amped up the quality it is a really good serve placement. I combined it with the fast hook serve for good measure.

I have been told, rightly or wrongly this version is a sort of two in one formula i.e., with booster incorporated.

So with this, Gozo has entered upon the realm of, in the words of James Z, Spoofster Supremist.
