Day 1 of the World Olympic Qualifications for a ticket to the London 2012 Olympics took place today on the 10th May in Doha, Qatar. Three unexpected defeats occurred in the group stages of the men's singles event which included Great Britain's Paul Drinkhall, Frances Emmanuel Lebesson and Simon Gauzy.

Emmanuel Lebesson the number 2 seed of the tournament with a career high World Ranking (WR) of 49 lost to India's Amalraj Anthony (WR.165) in five games with scores 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-5. Later in the day Emmanuel Lebesson came up against a determined Wu Chih-Chi of Chinese Taipei and lost in six sets with scores 8-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-4,9-11,8-11.
More disappointment come from the French camp as Simon Gauzy (seed 3) returning from ankle injury lost his opening match to Slovenia’s Sas Lasan in five sets with scores 11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8, 11-8. In the third match of group 3 Simon came up against Pistek Lubomir and redeemed himself and gained confidence in winning in a full seven sets (11-8, 8-11, 6-11, 11-3,11-7,9-11, 11-8).
Great Britain's Paul Drinkhall won his first match against USA's Barney Reed in five sets (11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4,11-6) however had an unexpected loss to Vitaly Nekhvedovich (WR. 241) in a full seven sets (11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 8-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9).
Elsewhere, number 1 seed Tiago Apolonia won his first two matches of the group stages defeating Yannick Vostes and Niagol Stoyanov. The number 4 seed Andrej Gacina defeated Andrei Filimon and Saleh Ahmed.
In group 10 Great Britain's Liam Pitchford had a superb win over Bartosz Such in six sets with scores 12-10, 11-9, 10-12, 11-6, 4-11, 14-12.
