Hi guys, I thought it would be a good idea to start a discussion about our immediate and long term goals in the sport of Table Tennis. As the community is full of exciting, passionate Table Tennis lovers, I hope that a lot of interesting stories could come out.

If there are no immediate goals, it would be great such members could speak about the issues they are facing related to the game or things they are interested to work on and so on.

Short term: move my feet more to get into position. As an older man, I find that the feet just don't listen to the brain. It has taken me over a year to move them. And I practice some of the foot drills.

Another short term: get a new prescription on my glasses. I'm finding that I can't read the lettering clearly. I can see clearly at 50M, 75M, and 100M, however, that doesn't help my TT skills....

Long term:. Let me finish the short term goals first.

Short term goals: have fun.

Long term goals: have fun.

No, for real, fun is definitely a central goal and I definitely play for fitness and exercise.

I am in good shape but having TT as part of the routine that I use for cardio and physical fitness makes cardio and physical fitness much more fun.

I am a process oriented person so I like doing training drills better, for the most part than playing matches.

But, there are some people who are no fun to train with and lots of fun to play matches with. So, most of the time when I play matches, I think of it as training anyway and I try different tactics.

At this point I don't honestly care if I improve more or not. But I notice that, as I play, without thinking of the goals, I keep improving.

I'll split this into short, mid and long-term

Short-term: It's basically everything that I want to happen in this month. I'm currently working on my footwork, trying to introduce more tension and awareness into my game with several multiball drills such as Falkenberg or 3-Point FH. In essence I would love to play and move as if I'm on cocaine without the cocaine part.

Mid-term: I was on a break in 2013 and 2014, haven't held a racket in those two years at all. Since Jan 2016 I've picked up the slack and started to seriously think about a schedule and a more adamant approach to my training sessions, with the ultimate goal of catching up on the two years I missed by the end of 2016. I try to stay optimistic, but ultimately I feel like I'm reaching for stars here. I'm overall a really training-dependant guy and notice how much my game suffers almost instantly as soon as I don't practise for two or three weeks, so you can imagine what two years did to me. However I started noticing that the general touch and feeling is coming back, so we're on the path of recovery :D

Long-term: The long-term goal is the true fantasy of a lunatic, but I'll keep working towards it and see where it takes me in 5 years time. I'd like to end up on a skill-level around the german Regionalliga (TTR ~2150-2200). I would say that I am quite self aware, yet I don't want to sound arrogant when saying that I think I do have the potential (read: talented, gifted) to play on a way above average level, however until this year the dedication and proper training just wasn't there. In the past 6 months I realised how much of a difference it makes if you practise 5 times a week instead of just twice, and every single ball you play has a purpose and is a stepping stone towards your goal, rather than just hitting the club and playing a game or two. The former is the kind of time investment and mindset that one should bring when you're aiming skyhigh. Train exceptionally if you wanna be exceptional ;)

To give you an idea of where the Regionalliga is in the German league structure, it goes as follows in descending order:

1. Bundesliga (TTBL) > 2. Bundesliga > 3. Bundesliga > Regionalliga > Others

Short term- Enjoy the game and help others find the passion I have for it.

Long term- Same as short but also get to 2000 USATT, very well rounded, and do free coaching for beginners once I get there.

Short term: Pimp Up Table Tennis to children and old dudes/gals.

Long term: Have children who are rising in level become leaders in their schools to establish and grow TT programs at school.

Ultimate Long Term goal: Get MOM on side of her TT children. This will drive up demand for new clubs and coaches. If only 1 percent of Schools have even social-competitive programs, then some will want to get better. That is where the children leaders and new clubs help. There are IDK, 30 million children in schools, maybe more, maybe less? Out of 30 million, if 1 percent (that is 300,000 if you dont have a calculator handy) partipate in TT and 10% of them become more serious about playing outside school and learning, that is a LOT of new clubs and coaches needed for 30,000 new players. Even a 1700 USATT rated player would be a regional coach with that sudden jump

Mid term goal (approx 2 years): Play a two-wing looping game based on high qality spin-variance oriented services and controlled but spinny loops, flicks, drives and smashes.

Short term goals (coming year):
- Improve my FH pendulum service and create a reversed one
- Improve my FH loop on backspin
- Improve my FH flick
- Impove my counterdrive technique by including wristbend and fingerpressure
- Improvement of stance (lower) and footwork

I have just reached my long term goal I had for the last ten years: Become a player in our club's first team. With the next season starting in September that is where I'll be playing. So I don't have any long term goals anymore but therefore some new short and mid-term goals. First goal is to keep my TTR level stable over the next months to secure my spot in that team. Mid-term goal is to increase my TTR by 50-100 points within the next few years.
