So a couple of things that people need to remember when they make these posts about getting rid of Hayata.

The first is that neither SYS or WMY came. We saw the last time WMY played Sato, who has better WTTC results than Hashimoto this year.

The second thing is that HH played the only player on the CNT who will likely be on the main team, and a player who after SYS and WMY matches up with her pretty well. So she didn't just play anyone on the CNT, she played the best player on the CNT at this event, who was probably put in the slot because the CNT was hoping she would play Hashimoto, which probably says a lot.

Finally, Hayata is not *selected*. Hayata qualifies by ranking. And even for this match, she played outside her slot, which means she agreed with the team agenda. Maybe she was hoping for Chen Yi but she got Kuai Man regardless. In any case, she is not going to win easily vs the CNT, she has been the dominant non-CNT player since after the Tokyo Olympics until the emergence of Miwa Harimoto.

All of which is to say that for a country like Japan, it sets a bad precedent if you start with the argument that a player who is playing better than their teammates in just about every measurable way should not be allowed to play. Remember, Hayata did not play Wang Yidi or Chen Yi and she may very well have lost to them, but neither of them are likely to be on LA 2028, She played the only player who is likely to be in LA 2028. She did what she does but it clearly wasn't good enough. But the ramifications of saying that a player who qualifies to play should not be selected to play based on objective measures has ramifications that even China cannot fully avoid in modern times. As long as you can come up with a qualification criteria that is reasonable and objective and that allows everyone to understand its basis, whether it be weighting heavier for all players losses to CNT players etc., that is better than just targeting Hayata because it is the cool thing these days. Even in China now, they pick the players that win the internal trials or the ones that qualify by WR or even when the rules were changed to remove Wang Yidi, the new standard ended up hurting Wang Manyu. So it wasn't just remove WYD, it was a new points system that was applied and when WMY failed it, it wasn't adjusted to only target WYD.

So it is not just *team morale*, it is the team concept of meritocracy that gets affected when you drop a player who has outperformed their peers. Such things ruin countries. It requires more than just targetting one play, and it is much easier for an event like this when you have 5 players on a team and harder for events like the Olympics when all 3 players are required.
Hayata qualified for the spot. Anything else is blah blah blah.

Yes and no. Yes I agree with you that Hayata was there afrer a selection process. But there are other related issues that are important and many people who do not weigh other things as heavily will try to separate qualification from the final match vs China. I haven't even discussed many of them.

These players are spending their whole lives trying to make national teams and play Olympics. It is always the fan boy who thinks it is a cool idea to just switch out a player in a critical match for a player who has no record of performance (which is not what happened today but was what was being proposed at WTTTC with proposing Mende play in place of Hayata. You can follow what hapoened to Batra in the Indian team selection process and see whether it was as simple to her that her not being selected was all that mattered.

I suggested that for the WTTTC Final vs China that Japan should not have selected Hayata for 2nd singles. She lost both her matches against SYS and WMY and they lost the overall match 3-2. At the time would have been better to select Rin Mende as the China players rarely played with her or not at all compared to Miyu Nagasaki. Unfortunately Sato was not selected for this event.

I was told that by not selecting Hayata it will affect the team morale but the same thing keeps happening again where she loses to every Chinese player in a team match.

I hope Japan try and selects both Hashimoto and Sato in future events as I feel like their chances of winning against China when SYS and WMY are on the team are greater with these 2 players along with Miwa than continuing selecting Hayata and expecting the same outcome over again.
I Agreed with you. A team of Sato, Hashimoto and Miwa will be the most dangerous team against the chinese. Japan's current selection process has to be modified. They have selected Hayata for basically all major team events in the last decade and it did not work against the chinese. The number 1 selection criteria should be based on " who the chinese least like to face " - It is very obvious - it is a team of Miwa + choppers. Other selection criterias such as World ranking and results of national championship should play 2nd fiddle.

Just be clear in your mind what message thia sends to players who are trying to become good table tennis players and who are working on their game, espeicallly players who could beat Sato and Hashimoto as Odo, Hayata and Miwa can.. Remember, this is not a communist coiuntry per se like China even if there is communal investment in table tennis. These are players who without guarantee of success have chosen their best paths to success all their lives. It isn't juat about China.

What will ultimately happen is that many countries will invest in learning how to play defensive styles again. Part of the reason why those players do well is that many countries do not invest in practicing against defense given how relatively rare the style is. But if that changes, then good luck to the choppers. They are definitely special athletes but when the ball slows down, they will become susceptible to many kinds of players who will become anti‐defensive specialists.

Matsushima WO?
It is a crazy schedule and he is in the XD final. He probably isn't 100% (not that anyone cares when you are a top athlete) but since they are winning in XD, he will at least finish that event.

BTW, where is the pop they play on the interludes from? I like it but i am not familiar with it lol...

This has nothing to do with communism.
If your head to head record against the top Chinese player is 0 win from 25 attempts, a.k.a Hayata, the sensible thing to do is step aside and let someone else have a go.

You may not like the selection process and that is a subject for debate, but it's well known by the athletes ahead of the Olympics. If you want the spot that Hina currently occupies, then earn it. Both Sato and Hashimoto have the opportunity to do so as the ranking on Jan 3, 2028 will be used to determine the top 2 singles spots for the Japanese. Also, keep in mind that Men's and Women's Teams has been removed from the LA2028 Olympics. Instead it will be Mixed Teams where the dynamic is quite different. Other factors to consider are that it's not only China that Japan needs to think about. For example, SYB plays very well against choppers as does Sabine Winter.

China is a socialist country that's currently run by a communist party.

Communism <- Socialism -> Capitalism -> ...
Left -------------------------------------- Right

However, selection systems have nothing to do with political ideologies.

CTTA tried a selection system for Paris 2024 that was even fairer (WR determined who got to be fielded in MT/WT) than that of JTTA and it ran into the same problem of selecting inappropriate players, WYD to be specific, but unlike the rigid JTTA, the flexible CTTA corrected the course after much public outcry and directive from the pragmatic central government, not unlike what KTTA did for Tokyo 2020 after the incident of JJH.

OTOH, many associations, even those in Europe, still select players without much transparency. Remember Matilda Ekholm of SWE? I recall many MyTT members voiced against the use of selection trials by USATT. Should I just lump them all together as one joke of democratic countries? So why the double standard?
