A writeup on Hayata. Getting 3 gold at ATTC 2021 was the point when Hayata felt she could give CNT players a challenge.

https://nishispo.nishinippon.co.jp/article/815852?rct=others

Instead of pulling the rank, Hirano wants to play her role of senpai well enough that Harimoto can rely on, if only a bit.

Thinking back on her first WTTC back when she was 15 and how she was chosen partly because she showed promise and was young (both Hirano and Ito were selected by recommendation), Hirano feels Harimoto was selected probably because of her strength, unlike her. Harimoto says she is not thinking too much about the Olympics right now since this is her first WTTC and so wants to work hard with the same feeling.

https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/articles/-/291629

Sounds like some bad blood happened hence the no coach on the bench decision. I wonder how much of Ito’s mother bares responsibility of her triumph and now decline….
Probably more than we realize. Mariko-san, Hirano's mom, revealed in the Morning Show on 2024/1/29 how she had held in her feeling in the past 2 years.

I remember Hirano's mom appeared on TV after Hirano was announced as the 3rd member last time and how she encouraged her to play her role well and support her teammates as best as she could.

>I am the only active athlete to have won a gold medal.

That's true, but that was at the previous Olympics, and the reality is that you couldn't make the singles, so I want you to switch and say that you want to try your best in the team.

Hirano and Ito are becoming parables of what to do and what not to do.

With Ito's history of ditching partners both on and off court, does she bear responsibility for the Tokyo lineup as well? As much as we like to blame Ishikawa, I wonder how much of a say Ito had in not playing with Hayata after WTTC 2019, and how much that impacted JNT's decision to not field Hayata in WTC 2019. This is just a hutch, but going by Ito's personality, it wouldn't be surprising if she had wanted to take on the challenge of winning 2 singles points instead of knowing her limits and trying to take down the more pivotal doubles opener with Hayata.

Rewatching this really puts things in perspective. Despite the intense battle with Ishikawa over the singles spot, Hirano was able to put aside their differences and get along with her senpai for the sake of doubles. Contrast that with how awkward Ito is making things for Harimoto now.

Japanese women's team drama is the most compelling theater in the world of table tennis.

Never thought I'd be watching TV Tokyo and following along so intently when I first decided to take up TT as a hobby lol
Japanese women demure and submissive my foot!!!

Looks like Ito has already gone shopping. Hayata confirms that Ito was not present during the previous day's training and that the five of them only came together on the press conference day itself.

Where to start with Ito... She proudly admits that she hasn't been training since all Japan, says that she's gotten better but is still feeling a bit of pain, hints that there was tension within the team but that things have become "more peaceful" since the Paris race ended. And she refers to Miwa as the 'new member' once again. At the group press conference she boldly stated that she's the one on the team with the most WTTC team experience and compared that to Miwa's debut.

It's so bad but I can't look away.
Yeah, personalities like this need to be humbled. That ship has to be sunk.

Speaking of doubles in WT, I think the last time Ito played in one was back at TWC 2018. Her win over LSW at WTTC 2018 really changed the landscape, which is when I think Ito first became In contract, AFAIK, Hirano has never mentioned about the 250 pts she gave up to Hayata to this day when she was technically in 2nd place [(12/14/2023 at 1:50am)].

Interesting for me to see that Hirano and Hayata were serving as "practice partners" and especially "BALL PICKERS" for their teammates during the Tokyo Olympics.
One for the future spats......

If it were China, they would've put Hayata in the center, Hirano and Ito to her left and right, and Kihara on the far left and Harimoto on the far right.

Ito gives a rare update on Instagram, saying again she wants to achieve what others have not.

Eh, she has been really "active" for "the only active gold medalist" after Zennihon Takkyu 2024...

I don't think Takukichi is driving a Ferrari but he must be making enough to survive.
I don't know the number of subscribers he has, but many people have full time jobs on youtube with around 50k subscribers. And there are even top chess players who make much more money streaming chess and chatting with fans than playing at the top 10 level. Niche sports are just hard to make good careers in and the social influencing/streaming has given the major talents an important alternative stream, they just need to figure out how to tap into it. I am sure Kato Miyu can get more than her fair share of simps.

thats Japanese table tennis for you.
so many of them retire with still plenty of mileage left. If they were in Europe, they would still continue for sure.

with this current generation, they did turn pro way earlier (say 3 to 5 years) than the previous generation, so not surprised if they would retire also 3 to 5 years earlier than the "norm" too.

And with so many up and coming youngsters, the culture is, retire to make way or stay on and get embarrassed. Many tend to choose the former when they feel they can't make it into the top 3/5 any more.
