This is very bad news for the whole world.

I think the latest development is the real bad news for Ukraine. Working with Japan on combat drones is like Australia getting US nuclear subs (going from benign to malignant), putting a target on their chest asking China to take aim, as Victor Gao once put it.

The war has been a nuisance in the eyes of China. Relations with Russia has been lukewarm at best since the Sino-Soviet split, but the West has pushed Russia towards China after multiple (can I just say non-stop?) NATO expansion.

As an American, I would've said the same words as Trump told Zelensky at the White House.
As a Chinese, I would've said the same words as Geng Shuang told the members (here and here) at the United Nations.

Ukraine is able to defend itself with limited resources against a stronger opponent, rather than attack. Perhaps it is this ability that interests Japan in the first place?

No, it generally is not up to the people of a country who leads the country if you mean something like "they are all responsible individually for who leads their country". Even in elections, the people who voted for the loser have to live with the results of actions of those who won (Brexit). And unfortunately, there are people who will make money off wars who will also influence who is the next leader, including the current leadership to the degree they can use their power and platform to stack the deck in their favor should they want to do so. The truth is that gaining power is a violent act - there is a reason why many leaders are ruthless men of violence.

May I answer this as someone who lived in the Donbas prior to 2015? I do not support Russian bombardments of the Donbas—whether in 2014, 2022, or 2026. As an eyewitness, I can state that it was the Russians who were—and remain—notable for attacking residential areas. Ukrainian forces also fired in the direction of Russian troops, resulting in civilian casualties—something I do not support either. However, I would like to point out that between 2015 and 2021, the number of civilian casualties steadily declined; according to official sources from both sides, 36 people died in 2021. Most of these deaths were caused not by shelling, but by previously laid mines. In contrast, more than a thousand civilians were killed by Russian shelling on February 25, 2022, alone.

I also do not support the Russian "special operation" in Odesa. Dozens of civilians died there. There is evidence that the two main organizers—the Odesa police chief and the Odesa fire chief—fled immediately to Russia, where they subsequently received state awards for "excellent service."

Yes i could see a way to stop the fighting. The opposite way that was chosen. EU, UK, US instead of supporting Ukraine militarily should have been clear that they would NOT support it anymore (= no money, no weapons, only diplomatic support), after all Ukraine was not part of EU and NATO, there was no legal or moral obligation to do so, and Ukraine would have been forced to compromise. Ukraine would perhaps have lost some territories, US would have to remove soldiers, bases and strategic interests, but 1+ million of young men would still be alive and millions wouldn't have fled the country. Ukraine would be a smaller and different country but much stronger and already starting to build its bright future.

This approach is not new; it was already tried in 2015. It did not work. Putin attacked Ukraine again in 2022, and for the first 4 to 8 months, there was no significant military aid. Putin did not stop, and Russian forces kept attacking. Even now, Zelenskyy proposes halting hostilities along the front line, but Putin consistently refuses.
