I think the latest development is the real bad news for Ukraine. Working with Japan on combat drones is like Australia getting US nuclear subs (going from benign to malignant), putting a target on their chest asking China to take aim, as Victor Gao once put it.This is very bad news for the whole world.
The war has been a nuisance in the eyes of China. Relations with Russia has been lukewarm at best since the Sino-Soviet split, but the West has pushed Russia towards China after multiple (can I just say non-stop?) NATO expansion.
As an American, I would've said the same words as Trump told Zelensky at the White House.
As a Chinese, I would've said the same words as Geng Shuang told the members (here and here) at the United Nations.

(Foreign Ministry responds to reports of Ukraine potentially producing drones in Japan: a threat to regional peace and stability)
https://hkcd.com/newsTopic_content.php?id=8761379
(RT reporter: It has been reported that Ukrainian defense companies are actively seeking military cooperation with Asian countries, including the potential production of combat drones in Japan. Russia has repeatedly warned that Japanese support for Ukraine could further embroil Japan in the conflict and prolong it. Is China concerned about the increasing military and drone production cooperation between Ukraine and Japan? Does China believe that such cooperation will harm peace and stability in the Asian region?
Guo Jiakun: China has consistently maintained that cooperation between countries should be conducive to promoting regional peace and stability.
In recent years, Japan has aggressively pursued "remilitarization," developing medium- and long-range powerful offensive weapons, lifting the ban on the export of lethal weapons, engaging frequently with countries outside the region, expanding the scope of activities of its Self-Defense Forces, and building a combat-ready system. This is a breach of the Japanese Constitution, international law, and the principle of "exclusively defensive defense," challenging the post-war international order and contradicting Japan's self-proclaimed image as a "peaceful nation." Japan's "new type of militarism" is gaining momentum and threatening regional peace and stability. The international community must be highly vigilant and resolutely curb it.)
