Conspiracy theory alert !! It seems to me that ML withdrew due to unfair draw rather than injury just like what ZJK did in Korean Open.

Does a tournament a player withdraws from (be it conspiracy or injury) still count as a tournament that player has participated in? Does it matter of a player withdraws without having played, or withdraws after having at least played a competitive point at the table?

My instinct tells me we're seeing the long arm of the severe punishment promised to Ma Long after the 2017 China Open. While untouchable as #1, less so after seen as dimished or even finished in the eyes of the world. (So, how's that for a conspiracy theory?)

Turns out, yes!

https://www.ittf.com/2018/11/02/ma-long-apology-swedish-open-withdrawal/

from the article:

Despite his withdrawal yesterday – before being able to take on Jens Lundqvist in their round of 32 match – Ma Long has ticked that box, but it now remains for him to recover in time for the end-of-year showpiece event.

How was it an unfair draw?

Well, different people can apply wildly different notions of fairness. Some adhere to a notion in which the ordering of a fair tournament is such that the higher-level players are evenly distributed across the branches, so they are expected to encounter each other later rather than sooner. Note that different people also might have very different perspectives on player levels/strength.

Some might feel that a fair distribution is a random distribution, which is an entire thing altogether.

Ao an unfair draw would be either a draw in which the player levels aren't evenly distributed, or (quite contrarily) a draw in which players are not distributed randomly. (As a mathematicion I find it quite hard to state how one would be able to spot the latter one, randomness being rather random.)

In this case, I guess some think too many high-ranked players are contained in the "upper half" of the tournament's branches.

The draw is perfectly fair, it's just the seeds might be 'wrong' in terms of actual player abilities.

Ridiculously exploitable that Ma Longs appearance counts when he pulled out.

Watched highlights and saw that Jorgic had a match point Vs Niwa. Ouch that would have been a huge win for him.

It was not the first time he lost the match he was leading. It is a big problem for him. Other think is that Niwa plays really poor lately, check japan TT league matches.
i agree to that he been in very bad touch lately, not performing like he used to

True but Koki at his best would never lose to a Jorgic level player but he is very streaky in general.

The current system does not have anything to do with the seeds. The core issue is the removal of "separation by association," which has taken effect for World Tour since the start of 2018 after what happened at the Bulgaria Open up above.
