A European Academy has been set up in Schwechat. Over 5 years of planning, Werner Schlager the World Champion in 2003 has gathered enough funding to make it all happen. 43 million Euros by the Austrian Government and the Schwechat Municipality, producing a state-of-the-art facility.

The facility is for players of Europe and the rest of the world, Schlager says in a speech amongst 500 lucky guests at the opening on Tuesday 11th January 2011.

Perhaps this is what Europe needs, massive neutral centres that can bring the best together in an attempt to get closer to the ever improving Asian teams!

This is immense, there need to be a lot more of these around Europe, as Schlager is suggesting so that more european players can compete with the Chinese and at the international stage. The main problem is money and table tennis needs to be marketed in a way so that more of these acadamies can have funding so that they are able to set up more of these complexes around the globe.
