Having followed the season in the TTBL (German League) I don't see this as an upset, but rather as a logical consequence of Franziska's development. The world ranking positions don't always tell the truth ;)

well, you can check out the head coach of Korea, Yoo Nam Kyu, olympic champion and also his student Ryu Sung Min. Kim Taek Soo and Kim Ki Taek are also legends of Korea and and their peaks were not long ago (almost same generation with Yoo Nam Kyu). The best defensive player ever, Yoo Se Hyuk, is still playing, silver WTTC 2003, which as far as I remember he is the only one defensive player achiving that.

For your reference:
and tell me what you have got after research on Japan achievement.

OK, here's the breakdown for Japan and Korea in parallell.

World championships singles & doubles (men & women)
Korea, total gold medals: 3

Japan, total gold medals: 30
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Table_Tennis_Championships#Results_of_Indivi dual_Events

World championships teams (men & women)
Korea, total gold medals: 2
Japan, total gold medals: 15
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Table_Tennis_Championships#Results_of_Team_E vents

Olympics (gold, silver, bronze. All classes)
Korea, total medal count (gold, silver, bronze): 18
Japan, total medal count (gold, silver, bronze): 1
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_tennis_at_the_Summer_Olympics

World cup (gold, silver, bronze. All classes)
Korea 23
Japan 9

If you want the silver and bronze medals in the World championships, please feel free to look around yourself. I was unfortunately unable to find them.

Combined medal tally since the beginning of table tennis time
Korea: 46
Japan: 55

That seems to indicate that my memory might be slightly better than yours.
However, in the greater scheme of things, that doesn't matter one bit :)

And thank you for the video link. It was really nice to see Kim Ki-taik. He and Hyun Jung-hwa are two of my favourite players of all time :)

If you count from the Japan dominance period or from the beginning of table tennis, well I admit that we are actually talking in totally different languages. Since Yoo Nam Kyu Won Olympic champion (1988, Seoul), I barely remember Japanese players winning on big stages. Why I count from that time, because table tennis was in the form that similar to now (similar but not same).
But anyway, your memory is better :) Cheers.

Can we all just get along :) table tennis=love it! live it! play it :) table tennis is life ! lolz :p
Sure we can. There's no malice in bricephan's post, nor is there in mine. We disagree and get along at the same time. It's why this forum is better than the other TT forums on the internet :)
