  1. Current state of Xu Xin

Basic physics/maths dictates that you can't make a bigger ball of the same weight rotate as fast as a smaller ball with the same weight, all other things being equal. Or you really think that the 40mm ball and the 38mm ball had the same level of spin and the smaller ball was only faster?
  2. Current state of Xu Xin

The bigger diameter is the simplest point, but in general, I don't understand the point Squareball is trying to make at all.
  3. Holy crap what chinese rubber is available in 1.7 / 1.8 similar to Tenergy 64

I start many of my students off with Dawei 2008XP in 1.8mm - the rubber is pretty heavy so it hardly makes a difference.
  4. Current state of Xu Xin

Can anyone watch this and conclude that FZD dominated XX? (okay, no one said that but my point is that this could have gone either way).
  5. Current state of Xu Xin

Carl, I think you have been terribly unfair to Xu Xin on this thread. I think Xu Xin has done everything that has been asked of him to improve and has done a magnificent job. The problem is that his strokes on his backhand side are currently not at the level to get it done and his forehand is...
  6. Ask Marcos Freitas a question on the TTD podcast!

It is hard to come from a country like Portugal and get to top 10 in the world. You have also improved almost every year in the rankings. What kinds of special experiences/insights have you had that have helped you get to a high level and continue to improve? What would you have done...
  7. Changing my forehand rubber

Tenergy 05 is the king amongst Euro-type when it comes to loop drive spin or easy spin, yes. Because of your blade, it might be the only real option. But I think that Tibhar Evolution, Xiom Omega and Victas V>15 come pretty close these days so that at our level, it is more about preferences...
  8. Changing my forehand rubber

It happens to everyone who is not a pro. You keep swinging with that Hurricane and then you swing with something like Tenergy and wonder whether your shoulder needs this sh*t. I quit MX-S for the same reason. But I heard Omega 5 Asia is a bit higher throw and more forgiving than MX-S so I...
  9. Changing my forehand rubber

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unless your sponge is over 40 degrees in hardness, your blade will weigh the same with most modern rubbers unless you use a much softer modern rubber. The real difference is the swing speed you need to get the ball moving once you modify your stroke.
  10. Improving your forehand topspin technique (with TTEdge)

I don't drop the paddle, I just straighten the arm a little. IT looks like I am dropping the paddle but I am not. In fact, the higher the ball, the more I have to stay at the height of the ball. The most important thing is to brush - if the ball goes long, come around the side more and finish...
  11. Table Tennis Trick Serves! (VIDEO)

\ Since there weren't more than 5 serves, they were virtually all your favorite then :p.
  12. Improving your forehand topspin technique (with TTEdge)

Always do what your coach says and take him comments/insights from other people. One thing you should realize is that at the amateur levels, many things are possible but as you get better, limitations in amateur technique become easier and easier to expose. But in the end, you should always...
  13. Improving your forehand topspin technique (with TTEdge)

You are going to have to come around the side of the ball more but usually, you want to catch a ball on the rise or on the fall when looping, depending on your preferred timing. Even "the top of the bounce" is usually on the very early fall. Off the bounce with a few exceptions is the late...
  14. Improving your forehand topspin technique (with TTEdge)

Generating sufficient arc and topspin is hard with a low finish - most people who do this end up side swiping the ball in some way, especially if they want to get power, and get more sidespin then topspin when they come across the body. Boll compensates with extremely fast wrist action, more...
  15. Improving your forehand topspin technique (with TTEdge)

There are few reasons but the easiest one to understand is recovery - finishing on the same side of the body facilitates you entering the ready position, keeps you in balance and lets you transition most easily. The second one is holding line of site with the ball longer. Most people need to...
  16. Improving your forehand topspin technique (with TTEdge)

Yes, you've identified it. Some people would call it finishing on the same side of the body but other people like to say that the topspin must go over the eyes. There are some pros who finish lower, but they have some mechanics and other things that let them get away with it and there is...
  17. Improving your forehand topspin technique (with TTEdge)

I purposely left this out but now I realize that I wasn't looping at the beginning of the first video so people don't see my technique. But I would like people to compare my technique and see if they can spot it. In the first video, I start looping about 6 minutes into the video. The others, I...
  18. World Tour Grand Finals 2015

There was no trap - it was just an excellent rally which matched BLUE's description. FZD felt that his forehand should overpower Ma Long's backhand in a consistency battle, but the blocks didn't let him get good shots off and Ma Long made an excellent but clearly imperfect counter - I call it...
  19. World Tour Grand Finals 2015

Here is my theory - his real problem is that Dima is a bully - he is used to having more power than his opponents and overwhelming them with his power. I compare him to Sharapova - once the opponent does not have any trouble with his power, he has no real plan B. That is why his German...
  20. Improving your forehand topspin technique (with TTEdge)

I decided to post this because of a recent web board post. This is an illustration of my improvement on what Brett Clarke called "the number one mistake" that amateurs make on the forehand topspin. First video is the old technique - the two last videos are more recent. I have bad knees so I...
