I was told he can make a lot of money playing in big corporate tournaments in China. That is what he wants to do apparently as opposed to playing internationally.

Why is this tournament interresting enough for Xu Xin and Ma Long to participate, but not enough for Liu Shiwen, Ding Ning and Zhu Yuling??

I think they are all resolving health issues, though ZYL is clearly more complicated.

Reasons given for skipping the Tokyo Olympics Simulation, presumably the same for this National Championships, World Cup, and ITTF Finals:
LSW is still in rehab after her right elbow surgery.
DN put in a request for some time off to tune her form. Many suspect she's already retired and only waiting for Tokyo 2020+1 to finish before announcing.
ZYL is still in rehab after "an acute autoimmune disorder."
