There are unfortunately few among us that will understand the following:

We choose to play Japanese Penholder not because it’s easier but because it’s harder.

We appreciate the challenge

And find it more satisfying

outside of prime... it won't work, haha
Oh well, I'll just pretend I'm RSM then...should work ...

True dat. I've been dabbling around with a Jpen set-up for a while now (I use it in practice matches occasionally). Lots of fun, but still somewhat difficult to handle for my wrist.

Glad you’re find the appeal. Don’t overdo it, take it easy, let your wrist adapt. Not to overstate the obvious, but wrist adaptation should only while you’re adjusting to TPB

I completely agree! Plus, Jpen can still be innovated (backhand), so I've been trying something out for fun. I dub it OTPB.

I have been talking about this for some time:

You should put inverted on FH and OX LP on your BH side, train up unbeatable serve/3rd ball FH loopkill, and then on receive it would be OX LP receive (makes you immune to short spinny serves) + 3rd ball FH loopkill. If they serve long just pivot and loop it with FH and outspeed them, or just disgust them with RPB OX LP first and then FH loopkill. On BH rallying you should learn both TPB high speed punch blocks and RPB OX LP sudden chopblock - and then when opponents are disgusted by the LP chopblock and give a weaker shot, finish them off with your strong Jpen FH.

A lot of things to train up but i think it has some serious potential.

this should work quite well

even better if you can twiddle :devilish:

LP also removes sidespin serves out of the equation, sidespin serves can easily pigeonhole you into a disadvantageous spot especially if you are a traditional penholder

become cpen? haha

unironically i do think that if one were to develop JPEN further to fit the current game it would just converge and homogenize together with CPEN into one standardized grip and playstyle

especially with hinoki being increasingly a thing of the past, its inevitable that the few JPEN blades would be made entirely out of composite material

i do feel that putting cork on a CPEN blade is pretty comfortable than just hooking my index finger onto the bevel of the handle

maybe the modern JPEN blade would just be stiga cybershape CPEN with a cork on it

Maybe it might work.

From supply chain, they are reducing production of cpen and jpen blades. Its a loss making business.

I had a top company ask me to help with unsellable stock of cpen blades in China.
I said, if you can’t even sell (dump) it in China, then no one can help. I even suggested they sign on felix and maybe build a market in europe.

Have a look, many brands in the past would have a cpen option if every model, that has changed.

Other than some few keeping cpen alive, Im not sure if supply chain will die first or the style. Jpen is in a worse situation.

Maybe penhold will become custom blade maker products in the distance future.

Jpen cork on cpen blade has been around since I was a kid already. It certainly didn’t become popular as far as I can tell.

Yes. When i faced against penholders, there is nothing they can do against a quality short heavy sidetopspin or pure no spin/mild topspin serve that can seriously harm me. If they do any kind of push it is always attackable for me be it flick or loop. So it forces them to flick the ball which means I get to go into a rally, which again at similar level I will always be favourable as a SH player just due to superior BH. Even FH pendulum sidetopspin long to their wide BH exiting the sides is a big problem for them, it is not really pushable without giving up the initiative, and if they use TPB then we get into rally which is shakehand dominated, and if they try pivot with FH, the angle is too big, distance too short and allows for an easy block to their wide FH to finish them off.

LP allows the penholder to do pretty sick things against these short serves so it goes back to underspin push to 1st FH loopkill mode.

I think single side penhold just has too many loopholes. You need either LP or inverted for some kind of RPB play these days imo.

That can rack up a stupid amount of power, im sure, but I have something else already.
Trained it for a bit just now, almost as strong as RPB

I'm already used to SP, it's been a solid month + I trained with it

I'm developing something for TPB...

OTPB
Hey, as I mentioned in my post. If the end goal is having fun, go for it. At the end of the day, even if you want to compete you'll just end up in tournaments of whichever level you are. So the most important part of the TT journey is always to enjoy whatever you are doing.

Yep, it really is! Just really going for the fastest (or maybe most direct) setups here

Yeah, thanks man. I do intend to stick with Jpen (for training purposes until "further notice") and get better with it. I had an inflammation on my wrist a while ago (unrelated to the Jpen thingy), so I'm aware that I have to be careful with it and to not force anything. Nevertheless I find the challenge quite enticing.
Playing with Jpen and enjoying it feels a bit like showing up at a meeting with a Hot Rod instead of what everyone else has, such as Volkswagen, Toyota etc.
