What a game. SYB lost her and Hirano found her FH after the first 3 games, but somehow she still pulled through
At crucial moments like her two match points, Hirano also lost her FH

Great match. Hirano pays once again for activating her ZJK gene too late. That said, either player winning would have been completely worthy. Now we are stuck with the "dumb" Hayata as Japan's only serious medal hope but we also have to hope the PRK player loses her ZJK gene...

Amazing match and incredible to see the emotions on both ends.

I cannot begin to understand the emotion to having 2 match point for an Olympic semi-final, after being 0-3 down in games, and not taking the win. Old saying still holds strong, all point won don't matter if you lose the last one.

there seem to be a lot of comebacks after 0-3 so far. Maybe coincidence but maybe players are not that used to the best of 7 anymore?

no, that's the reverse psychology effect, those that's closest to victory can become conservative and lose their ruthlessness while those that has their backs against the wall will fight crazily

Was really hoping Hirano could pull it off there. Down 3 games to bring it to even. Then down 5-1 in the 7th to bring it to even and then to earn the first match point. Felt like come-back was destined to happen.

But SYB never let her spirits drop at all. If she had lost, maybe she would've gotten some criticism for smiling throughout. Maybe smiling and staying postiive isn't a terrible idea after all.

I don't think there is anything you can say to cheer someone up that has lost like that after a huge comeback. Poor Hirano.
Even at our amateur level it happened to me this year . Was being destroyed by a much younger and higher ranked chopper down 0-2. Came back to 10-8 in g5 with 2 match points and lost it. Only time I’ve cried after losing . Even as a kid I can’t remember it even though it must have happened lol

I really believed this game would be like Hayata v Wang Yidi

Polcanova (15) 0-4 CM (2) (-5, -3, -0, -8)

MS QF
JWJ (8) 0-4 Calderano (4) (-4, -7, -5, -6)

WS QF
SYB (4) 4-3 Hirano (8) (4, 7, 5, -7, -8, -9, 11)
G7 40, 41, 51, 53 TO for SYB, 63, 67, 77 slight net for SYB, 87, 89, 99, 910, 1010, 1011, 1311
Lots of crucial nets and edges for SYB in the first 3 and last games.
Hirano played like crap (FH and BH were completely off) and her usual self didn't start coming back until G4 (FH started coming on) after a visit to the locker room. Had a terrible start in G7 but still managed to get 2 match points. SYB knew if she were to win she had to keep pressing Hirano's BH.

Shin should be back at the next games and it would take a miracle for Hirano to be back at the next games. That's the main reason I would have liked Hirano to win. But Shin was fully deserving.

CM: Thanks Shin... Or not? Seems like she is on form too?

It wouldn't matter. Both players are at the same level and because they are CNT main opponents, the game plan against them is already well known and established and the practice partners who imitate them are probably the same players lol. Even their serves are somewhat similar as are their spin games.

These North Koreans are so good technically and mentally tough as well.

Pyon's game is so good to watch. she plays a very text book style game, with focus on control, spin. Her movement on the court is incredible. I watch a lot of TT matches on YouTube, but I never saw her before.

WCQ hasn't been anywhere near his best all tournament, its not the bat.
Hindsight and all, but somehow I always felt there was a good case to be made for offering Ma Long a farewell in the Olympics singles. I would have loved to see that, in any case.

Hirano and Shin Yubin's post-game comments

Hirano: I started out really poorly. Normally I would have just lost like that, but I was able to win back 3 games. I had a chance at the end, but fell back into old patterns. It's a real pity that I did not manage to break the mould.

Hirano: I treated this as my last singles campaign from the beginning. I wanted to win a medal, it's really regrettable to have lost.

SYB: It was a really physically challenging match. In the middle of the match, I lost strength in my arm and could not even see the ball.

SYB: I felt that the flow of the match was disrupted after Hirano went to change clothes. She's a really good player. I did not think that I had won until the very end. We kept changing our tactics in response to each other throughout, so it was a really good match.

SYB: I did not cry when I won the mixed doubles bronze medal, but I did think 'it's over'. (This time?) The tears came out naturally. They were tears of relief that the match was finally over.

SYB: It's not over yet. I'll prepare for the remaining games by eating and resting well, and analyzing my opponents to play well. I also want to play an unforgettable match and win in the end so that I can tell myself I did well.

SYB: At this Olympics, I can't remember anything about the previous points. I'm only thinking about the ball that's in front of me, what to serve, and how to play.

When asked if we could expect to see her in the finals, Shin said 'Please look forward to it' with a big smile. It's an honor to reach the last 4. I want to win just like how I have thus far, I want to play with no regrets.
