it is called teamwork i believe
Regardless it was extremely endearing to see him there for his player all the way, almost beyond the call of duty, even on some points where she might have been embarrassed to celebrate, you could consistently hear him. Ma Lin has become similar as well.

What's with the jabs at CIC? She's Taiwan's best player and has had a really fine career. Adam speaks glowingly of her and her ability to come back from injuries.
Seriously? What's with the jabs at everyone? There is always something, the player is dumb, the player is overtraining, the player is blocking, the player is not good enough, thr player should retire now, the player should not risk taking injections, the player is not playing up to her seeding, the player is manipulating continental rating points. Working with the hand you are dealt doesn't matter, there is always an innovative way to show how lousy you are once you are not deemed a favorite like Hirano. I was completely confused by the beating two Chinese in a row thing. Seriously.

The talented one played through the same injury issues as the dumb one. The dumb one still got a medal. But being dumb is not enough. CiC who spectacularly represented and played better against Sun than juat about everyone else did is just another player worthy of the same derision pattern. Nothing new here folks!

So am I. But could someone, please, explain to me the behaviour of the Chinese officials? And the ITTF too, I think. Nobody looked happy up there!
Many Tieba users believe that the World Cup was restarted in preparation for SYS to get the Grand Slam.

SYS became the heroine in 2018/2019 when she blocked Hirano in WS/XT at Buenos Aires 2018 and Ito in WS at WTTC 2019, Team World Cup 2019 and again in WS at Tokyo 2020. OTOH, CM was viewed as unreliable, as she lost to Hirano in WS at ATTC 2017 (ZYL and DN lost to Hirano as well, and CM was also down 1-2 before 3-2 in WT at Asian Games 2022) and LSW in WS at WTTC 2019 (CM way up in H2H). Yet, in a twist of fate, for whatever reason, Ito just couldn't get past CM (100% win rate), while SYS and WMY had lost twice. DN, LSW and ZYL were also losing to Ito. That became CM's lifeline and gave her an Olympic ticket.

After CM won the WS at Tokyo 2020, she claimed her era has arrived and LGL didn't take it well as she had no national titles, no continental titles, with only the Olympic title and World Cup title, both beating SYS in the final. That's left a bad taste in the CNT's mouth since.

Fools like you will believe anything if it props up your ignorant and fearful world view.
Is
Fan is far from guaranteed a win today; if I remember correctly, despite losing 0-4 in the WTTC, Truls had game points in at least 2 games, and he always had the lead.
Isn't it on tomorrow?

Congrats Chen Meng, she basically fought not only against SYS but her whole fandom and the CNT delegation. Sun's weakness was always her bh and CM exploited it throughout the game to suppress her domineering fh
A CNT player fought against the CNT?
What were people expecting? CNT delegation celebrating a win against another CNT player in the majors, it's never happened.

Once again, convince those in Taiwan first. Some of them are prominent table tennis figures there. My comments have been mild in comparison. East Asian is the most competitive region in the world of table tennis for a reason. It is not treated as a pastime like in the US of A.

Okay, sorry if I said you were an idiot. 'Useful idiot' is a specific term reserved for people in the West spreading authoritarian propaganda.

I have friend and family members who are useful idiots in this regard, even though they are actually otherwise capable and normal people.

If you want to go ahead and share what your trustworthy sources are with me in private feel free to do so. I agree this isn't the place to talk about boxing and will respect your suggestion not to continue this issue any more.

Again, apologies for the hostile tone. It was more me being fed up with misinformation than anything personal.
Thanks dude, that's a great post, I appreciate it and its absolutely reflective of your status in here👍
All good with me, let's keep it to TT and just have fun me reckons.

You must seize the moment, let the zeio's of the world who call you dumb with the armchair quarterbacking be damned, choices like this to me are a no-brainer, longer career is no guarantee of anything when the medal already generated endorsement prospects and historical value well beyond that.
Already happened. Hayata has been appointed Ambassador to the Paris Olympics by Omega. That’s pretty’major’.

More on CNT's reactions after CM 4-2 SYS.

For comparison, Edgar Cheung Ka Long of HKG becomes the first fencer in 68 years and only the third in history to defend his Olympic foil gold. In the press conference upon his return, he puts the achievements of the fencing team in getting back-to-back Olympic gold on the previous generations for planting the trees and they are the ones that reap the fruits, stressing that it is the result of a concerted effort that spans multiple generations.

For world ranked no. 1 Vivian Kong who took gold in épée, she wants to set up a fund with her gold medal bonus to help children from grass-root families pick up sports. She failed the last two times, while being WR1 last time. When she first became WR1 in 2019 but crashed out in the Grand Prix immediately, she came back saying she didn't deserve to be WR1 and got criticized by her Romanian coach Tavi for "not knowing how to fence" and would do everything in her power to do her world ranking justice.

Both of them are missing only the World Championship title to complete the Grand Slam. Cheung Ka Long has already won everything in Asia while Vivian Kong is missing the Asian Games.

While we're at it, on why HKG has become a fencing powerhouse in a sport that is dominated by Europeans, a writer actually consulted her fencing friends and came back with a few pointers, the first of which is the following:

1. Fencing is a sport that emphasizes intelligence, psychology, and physical fitness, not just brawn. Due to the physique of Asians, some sports that emphasize pure strength and speed such as athletics, swimming, etc., Asians themselves have been more disadvantaged, in addition, Hong Kong's social culture does not encourage children to invest too much time into the same exercise, so the performance of Hong Kongers is limited in some sports that rely on repeated practice to improve performance. Fencing is a very complex sport, in addition to requiring you to have physical fitness and technique, it emphasizes on thinking, control, strategy. Even if you practice a thousand lunges and practice a thousand strokes every day, at the end of the day it may not be enough to beat a person who uses the brain. Both to flexibly use the rules (just the right-to-attack takes a long time to work out), but also to be cunning enough to deceive the opponent, Hong Konger's characteristics are flexible enough and smart enough, and the whole education is focused on whole-person development that is adept in everything, which naturally fosters the ability to handle complex matters, manage themselves and their opponents.

CM: My era has come.
Vivian Kong: I don't even want to say "making history." I think the achievements this past year has been beyond my expectations. Just being in sports and being an athlete is a really selfish thing because you're always training for your own body and then you win and you're up there on the podium. It's because so many people have helped me along the way but then they don't get the spotlight. Me and my team, we made history together... After going to my first Olympics, I realized that people have a voice. People care about what you say and what you think and what you stand for. As an athlete, I've been thinking about what I really care about and what's the message I want to support.

Post bronze medal match reports and comments from Shin Yubin herself

[Olympics] 4th place Shin Yubin. I'm determined to train diligently for much longer.

Shin Yubin, who had lost all four matches against Hayata before today, failed to reach victory at their fifth meeting once again. The fiercely contested match saw 3 out of 6 games played out to deuce, with Shin unfortunately losing out at the end.

Shin calmly admitted defeated at the joint coverage zone.

"Those who beat me have been training more diligently and for even longer than I have. I must recognize that and learn from them. I'm determined to train even harder and for even longer from now on."

"Though it's a pity to place 4th after aiming for a singles medal at the Paris Olympics, I have no regrets about the way I played. I've given my best at my current level. It's clear that I have to work even harder."

As soon as the match ended, Shin Yubin cheerfully congratulated Hayata for winning the bronze medal.

"I have been observing Hayata for a long time. She works really hard and plays matches with hunger. I congratulated her because I wanted to acknowledge that and become a solid player like her."

Shin Yubin, who arrived at the table tennis scene as a prodigy, has grown into Korea's ace through her hard work.

Though she missed out on a medal, Shin became the first Korean player to reach an Olympic singles semifinals since Kim Kyung Ah (Bronze) and Ryu Seung Min (Gold) in 20 years since the 2004 Athens Olympics.

At her debut in Tokyo 2021, Shin was eliminated by Hong Kong's Doo Hoi Kem (WR47, Hong Kong) at the round of 32. Despite not winning a medal, Shin showed significant growth in her 2nd Olympic outing.

"This is the result of 3 years of hard work since the Tokyo Olympics. The medalists worked even harder and deserve to stand on the podium. I must aim higher and continue to improve on my skills, mentality, and physicality in order to play even better table tennis."

Shin has confidence that she can continue to grow through hard work.

"I may not be able to beat those who are better than me right now, but I can continue to work hard. By working harder, I can become a better player."

"I'm sorry for not being able to repay those who have supported me with a singles medal. There's still the team event, so I intend to bounce back and play with conviction."

Shin also revealed that she had been struggling with pain for around a year and wanted to give up at some points.

Post-final report and comments from Chen Meng and Sun Yingsha

What Chen Meng whispered to Sun Yingsha after being crowned champion

CM: "There were no losers in this match. We took home Gold and Silver for China once again.

I'm really surprised, it feels like I've done the impossible. I felt like the underdog before the match, and did not think I could win. For the past two years, I've lost to ShaSha many times, and her playstyle is becoming more modern, her mentality more mature by the day.

All I thought abou at the table was playing point by point, because there's no guarantee that there will be another Olympics for me."

"What did you say to ShaSha when you hugged her?" The reporter posed the same question to both players.

CM: "I told her that she must keep fighting. Four years may be a long time for us athletes, but as long as we don't give up, anything is possible. I believe that prime ShaSha will be even stronger in the future."

SYS: We both performed well, but Meng Jie was the more resolute player. She was never shaken. I became a little nervous and anxious after the fifth set, and failed to persevere until the end.

At the mixed reporting zone, a reporter asked Sun Yingsha what Chen Meng said to her while they embraced.

"She told me to work hard and try again. I think the heavens are fair, they don't want me to think that I've already made it, but to settle down and continue to grow."

"Don't many champions strive for decades before reaching their goal anyway?"

Post Bronze medal match report and comments from Hayata

Tearful Hayata with left wrist so badly injured she could not enter the bath alone. "God is cruel"
Painkillers successfully injected 5 minutes prior to playing. "There are no ordeals that can't be overcome"

As with yesterday's semifinals, Hayata's left wrist was heavily wrapped in bandage. After the match, Hayata confessed that "My wrist started hurting during the match the day before yesterday, and I've been unable to face this reality for the past two days. Today's condition was the same, but after receiving a shot from the doctor, I felt that it might be possible to carry on. I fought with that belief. 5 minutes before the match, it felt like I only had 20 to 30% in me, but after the shot, I felt close to 100%.

"My condition was so bad that I could not get into the bathtub on my own nor use the dryer. Of course I was aiming for gold, and never expected God to bully me at such a timing. I even wondered if it was because I had done something wrong for the past three years. But I just told myself that it wasn't impossible to overcome. No matter the outcome, I wanted to fight with everything I had for the sake of everyone who had supported me and for the bronze medal. Winning the bronze medal under such circumstances makes this a medal even more valuable than gold."

Hayata Hina responds after sustaining a wrist injury during quarterfinals "The only thing to do was to believe in myself and fight 'til the end"

During the semifinals, Hayata lost after "playing without being able to accept reality. I did not expect God to be so cruel to me at such an inopportune time. Just before the 3rd place match, I received a painkiller shot. 5 minutes before the match, I was still thinking about how I could play to 20-30% of my level. All I could do was brace myself and fight 'til the end.

Even as the clearly injured Hayata continued to produce uncharacteristic errors, she persisted on and made adjustments to her playing tempo. "I played with the desire to bring the Bronze medal back to everyone in Japan who supported me until the very end." The 'God' that Hayata had spoken about smiled upon her at the very end.

Nah I don't expect them to jump up and down cheering but at least applause and smile. Last night, from Ma Lin, WYD to even LGL, everyone display a face as if CNT lost gold to a foreigner. Not even ML back in 2020 got such a cold celebration like that

What is this, the fencing channel?
Folks wonder why CM's gold is not well-received by the CNT. I'm referencing athletes from other sports whose achievements are equally if not more momentous yet still remain humble.

BTW, Vivian Kong just announced her retirement from fencing a few hours ago.

Let's turn to tennis, where Zheng Qinwen becomes the first-ever player from China to take gold in WS, breaking Li Na's SF finish at Beijing 2008. She beat World No.1 Iga Świątek who said the loss was a big hit in the SF and Donna Vekic who didn't take the loss well in the F. Despite creating history, Zheng still stressed after the match that Li Na is Asia's No.1 no matter what for being the first from China to win a Slam.
