Tough week for the NP Mallets. Sato, Yokoi, and Odo all lost earlier than expected. I guess if it's any consolation, they get a little extra rest before next week's Star Contender Ljubljana.

Edit: Odo/Yokoi still have doubles, but at least not as taxing as a full schedule.

wow, Shi XY just passed Nagasaki 3-0, might be a serious contender for the title this time
She's right up there with the best Japanese players, so not much of a surprise tbh. She's just a late bloomer in the senior ranks.

probably thanks to Chen Meng for opening up a spot too.
and CNT has been favoring QTY and KM with the former out of favor.

Let's just hope they have the view of SXY being a top 5 and give her more game time else just becomes the same as her best friend and get sublined (I hope not)

WS SF
YJN 3-1 SXY (7, -2, 7, 10)

WYD II in the making. It's abundantly clear by now that SXY has serious trouble handling FH-oriented shortpips players with good serves or FH-oriented inverted players (0W2L Ito, 0W3L Hayata). Not to mention her close losses to BH-oriented inverted players like Hirano (3W1L) and DHK (2W1L). OTOH, she handles longpips players and choppers rather well unlike WYD, such as Ni Xia Lian (1W0L), Kim Kum Yong (3W0L and multiple wins in Jia A from what I read), Bergstrom (1W0L this one included), Sato (1W0L this one included)...

WS QF
Odo 2-3 YJN (9, 4, -8, -7, -9)
Odo got lobbed down on the last point.

FNT women are having a field "week".

Wow Wen Ruibo! 3-0 against Poret and 3-0 against Darko! He’s stepping it up!
Very close games against Jorgic but maybe even more impressive that he then still has not dropped a single game this week. It is usually what separates the good from the great in China. The great are stepping up under pressure while many of the B-team players get too hesitant when things get close.

His technique and power does not look spectacular at all but it is very difficult to pressure him into errors. Very safe player.

What was Yuan Jia Nan's best singles results before this? I believe this might be her first WTT final and championship before this. What I could find:

Star Contender Ljubljana 2024 QF (lost to Hayata)
Singapore Smash 2022 QF (lost to Wang Yidi)
Champions Macao 2022 SF (lost to SYS)

Of course she also won the Europe top 16 2024 but its been an average of R16/32 finishes from her recent ITTF ranking points history. She'll probably get a big boost and be right behind Miu Hirano at 22 after this.

YJN (1985/5/11): Ahem, 40 years, 1 month and 4 days old...
In french its JNY, Jianan Yuan, smarty... we place the first name before the name, like Yingbin Xu when he plays for La Romagne, you want us to respect your country ? do the same in return, as Jianan is french. Just imagine if we did something like Rolland Jules, or Bertrand Irvin, where's the name ? where's the first name ?

When we name athletes by their first name in western countries, it's a sign of acceptance and support, like if they were a family member. And they love that. It's also a sign you're becoming famous.

She is an European Cup Single Champion. 2024 I believe but maybe 2023. She has her streaks of top level table tennis. Just saw you noted this late in your write up but it is usually best to point yo the highest level thing someone has done when writing these things.

Her forehand this week was untouchable. In that form ans with that timing, she can beat anyone.
