It won't work against FZD. Hugo is a special case of exactly the kind of player who that style shouldn't work against but it does because he learned TT late so he doesn't have a natural feeling for spin. It is crazy that Hugo essentially uses one serve with varying spins and placements in his career. But the predictability of that serve makes it easy for Truls to just disrupt.
I agree, the probability of the final being a 4 - 0 win for FZD are quite high in this match up.

Anyone in the final would lose to Fan.

But Hugo's play today shows exactly why he would have lost to fan. It is crazy how your weaknesses return at the worst possible time.
Why do you say he would he have lost to Fan (apart from FZD being brilliant I mean)?
I reckon Fans game would suit Hugo a bit more.
It seemed like Moregards constant changing was the problem, not something Fan does, at least not in the same way anyway.
Those 8 consecutive points lost in game 1 were crucial tho, Calderano should really have manufactured something for himself there...

F. Lebrun: My bronze medal!!!

Former HKG player Daryl Hung who has played Calderano in junior years points out that Calderano doesn't like to block at the table but instead has the habit of taking a step or two back to counterloop, which was exploited by Moregard, by pushing deep to Calderano's BH and then loopkilling the return diagonally.

Hugo struggles to keep the ball short and therefore takes openers often on the opponent's terms. What has been behind a lot of his recent improvement is being able to keep the ball shorter better so he gets better opening opportunities, but people who know how to control length and placement like Truls and just about anyone on the CNT can disrupt Hugo more favorably.

And yes, the match was close, Hugo's coach had no sense of danger because Hugo was the favorite. China would have called a timeout at 10-7, winning game 1 is a big deal for the underdog and is exactly why Hugo should have used a timeout and that gave Truls more hope and probably changed the outcome of the match.

As with Felix, if Moregard doesn't get at least 3 games and a lead in G7, I'll proclaim Harimoto the silver medalist.

I think the toss wasn't straight...

Man, now I really hope it’s not gonna be a 4-0 victory for Fan like in Houston 2021…
At this point it doesn't matter what happens in the gold medal match. Making it to the finals taking down world #1 from CHINA and taking down world #6 is amazing in and of itself.

Yes, I 100% agree on this.
If Calderano had got in front from 10-3 there'd have been a lot to think about in the Sweden camp.

Thanks - very insightful. The number of points that Truls won on that pattern was crazy and now it's obvious that the wide angles were from the fact that Hugo keeps thinking his quality will get him a long ball but struggles with the angles Truls was able to create consistently.

That's exactly why I keep stressing the importance of playing smart. Now her WS bronze and WT silver could be in jeopardy.

Hmm thinking about it, if JNT is bold and really had to replace Hayata with Kihara... that might also work? Considering Kihara/Harimoto is a better pairing than the deadlocked Hirano/Harimoto but that means Hirano needs to display her QF G4-6 form as first singles throughout. Or will Hayata be willing to play doubles with either one of her shimais...?

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURING.

--- Omar Assar was instructed by the umpire to improve his tossing motion right PRIOR to the start of next game . Really clever umpire, indeed.

Depressing realisation: once this event is over we are back to soulless, 0 crowd, side angle Wtt events
players will say at least the shuttles will have aircon

i mean... how difficult is to host a good tournament with spectators, good angles, and players travel with AC (and live in rooms with AC)
Feels like it is a hard ask
