WTT Contender Lagos in Nigeria kicks off on Tuesday with 2 days of qualification. Anders Lind is top seed in MS. Hina Hayayata is top seed in WS. She will probably get challenged by Honoka Hashimoto.

I don't know what happened, but poor Hina losing to Sreeja Akula at 7,8,3 is not normal. She needs to rest. Pencil in 400 points for Honoka Hashimoto.
Yeah that was really weird. Here I was thinking Sreeja had a poor draw but then saw Hayata had a poor result lol.

I see Mariam Aruna played today. Was tempted to make a joke asking if she might be related to Gozo. 😉

For those interested in seeing Quadri's daughter play, her match starts ~ the 4hr 13min mark here:

That first game was such a contrast to the rest of the match.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. She already took a multi-month break after Paris 2024. Merely delaying the inevitable. Poor Miwa got robbed of a GS trophy like her oni-san at WTTC 2025.

Once again, besides what I've pointed out over past few months, namely her hand being finished and reliance on painkillers to play well, and a playing style that can't afford reduced training volume, it comes down to how she positions herself in this cycle, when she has acted otherwise.

Nah, Sreeja took so much risk that if she can play like that consistently, she will be top 10 for sure.

Well, it's a tough balancing act trying to maintain your ranking so she can play Smashes and Champions while at the same time fully recovering from injury.

Miwa wasn't robbed. There was no cheating or points mistakenly given to Hina. Absent that, you either win or lose.

With her win in Lagos, Hashimoto is projected to get back to #14 in the World Rankings. She is scheduled to play the Star Contender Foz do Iguaçu and has a good chance of reaching the semis -- she should be the 4th seed and be able to avoid Miwa and Odo until the SF. Actually, she will temporarily overtake Hayata, SYB, and CIC because they all have points expiring from the Paris Olympic Games on August 5th (irrespective of her result in Brazil). However, they are scheduled to participate in the Champions Yokohama (7-11 August) whereas Hashimoto is not. Good news is that Hashimoto can make up for at the Europe Smash.

EDIT: I forgot that CIC made it to the finals of the Contender in Buenos Aires and she also entered the Star Contender in Brazil. So Hashimoto might not overtake CIC.
