Damn, ML still gets anxious even if he is 3-0 up . In the last set he made 3-4 rushed errors and in the matchpoint you could see his feet jump nervously more than needed after the receive. Jesus he is reigning world champion and he still gets anxious. somebody give him a B E E R

now as for the match, ML totally dominated the serve receive game. FZD is not that smart and he certainly needs to variate and mix things up more. Its almost certain that LGL will choose ZJK and ML for the olympics, no one in CNT can touch them now, even if they play bad at the internal trials

There is a Chinese national Champion named Xu Xin who also happens to be the best doubles player in the world. He might just go in as #2 given that he beats everyone not named Ma Long.

Come on. Not this discussion again. LGL only chooses which players go to the trial events. Not who wins them. Unless, as NextLevel implied, he tells players they have to lose on purpose.

CNT does not choose who goes. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) sets up the qualification process and you have to qualify with the IOC to go. AND IF CHINA GOT CAUGHT FIXING RESULTS THEY COULD GET DISQUALIFIED COMPLETELY. That is up to IOC discretion.

All CNT coaches choose is which players can go to qualification events. Not who qualifies.

Yeah maybe its too difficult/early to tell, but XX hasnt achieved anything significant in his career so far. ML managed to beat FZD in a world cup, clinched the worlt champ title and zjk is a grand slammer. XX only won a world cup struggling against samsonov and lost to fang bo in suzhou and FZD in asian champs, very close games though.

I think LGL knows that no one can mess with a healthy ZJK and a relaxed ML, both of them are devastating against XX when the stakes are high. The thing is, in an imaginary world if fang bo goes to the olympics alone he can clinch it same thing goes for FZD zjk xx ml . It would be a somehow "fair" thing if LGL prohibited ZJK from getting into the olympics, in order to give chance to other players, but then again LGL never trusts players who have never achieved a break through in their career or are in a bad state.. so purely from a logic point of view I dont see how any other player can go to the olympics unless ZJK blews it up totally or gets injured again

I love the Ovtcharov interview where he has a direct dig at how crap the new poly balls are, as one broke in his game!
"The new balls they're made of plastic, and the quality's not that good - like before!"

Glad to see the guy's got tougher balls than the ITTF and telling it like it is. All the coaches and top players here in HK hate the new ball, but just have to suck it up.

Yes but the first 22 players in the world ranking (may 16) are automatically qualified even if they fail in the continental trials. So I dont know if they will fix this or not cause its a long time till then , but LGL's choices especially in team events are always safe. Now for the singles, he will probably let them fight each other in pro tours

Are you saying the chinese players will fail to qualify during the qualification events? Otherwise, I don't really understand your logic. Like UpSideDownCarl had said, LGL does not get to choose who qualifies, otherwise China can get disqualified. As for singles, there would be no point in having them fight each other in pro tours unless NO CNT player makes it during the qualification event, which I'll let you decide how likely that would be. (Or everyone there could pull a Koki Niwa 2012 five times in a row and beat every Chinese there twice)

No I didnt say that, the rules are clear you can find the olympic qualification rules via google. I just copy & paste what I read in the rules. Since 22 highest ranked players in the ranking are qualified and only 2 slots per country are allowed for singles then no1&2 will play. So the pro tours results do matter

TTFrenzy, I think you may have missed or misunderstood a detail.

Singles qualification:
40 Continental qualification with a maximum of two (2) athletes per NOC qualified
22 ITTF Olympic Singles Ranking, not to exceed an overall maximum of two (2) athletes per
NOC
1 Tripartite Commission Invitation place 1 Host Country place
64 Total - with a maximum of two (2) athletes from the same NOC to participate in singles events.

If you read that, the first part of qualifying is the qualification events with a maximum of 2 slots being filled for each country. Only a country that fails to fill two slots in one of the qualification events would fill slots from the Olympic Ranking list in May 2016.

So, let's say, China somehow, miraculously did not fill any slots from that first category (CONTINENTAL QUALIFICATION EVENTS) where the first 40 players will qualify. Then they could qualify up to two players from the world ranking of May 2016.

Let's make another impossible hypothetical scenario: Let's say only one player from China qualifies through the Continental Qualification Events. Then the second qualifying player for China would qualify through the Olympic Ranking List in May 2016.

The more likely scenario is that China will fill both of its first two slots in the Continental Qualification Events and won't need that Olympic World Ranking List at all.

1. Singles Continental Qualification Athletes with the best results at the Singles Continental Qualification Events, held between1 June 2015 and 24 April 2016, will qualify for the Olympic Games according to thefollowing distribution of quota places:
6 for Africa
11 for Asia
11 for Europe
6 for Latin America3 for North America3 for Oceania______________40 Total

A maximum of 2 athletes per NOC can qualify.
The ITTF and its Continental Federations are responsible for holding Continental

qualification events following the general regulations for Olympic Qualification events.

One more thing to note. The reason the Continental Qualification Events happen up till April 2016 is that April 2016 is before May 2016 and the people who qualify through the events qualify before the World Ranking is used. Just saying.

But, hopefully, when the Asian Continental Qualification events start happening, we will all see how things unfold.

But if you read the rules, LGL and the CNT powers that be do not have too many ways to mess with who wins these qualification events.

Also, please note:

2. ITTF Olympic Singles Ranking Qualification Starting as of January 2016 ITTF will publish monthly the Olympic Singles Ranking basedon the same principles as the ITTF World Ranking taking into consideration only eligibleathletes for the Olympic Games.
Athletes who have participated in the Continental Qualification events but that have notqualified will be eligible for qualification through the ITTF Olympic Singles Ranking listissued in early May 2016.
The 22 highest eligible athletes, with a maximum of two (2) athletes per NOC on the ITTFOlympic Singles Ranking list published in May 2016, will be qualified provided that anoverall maximum of two (2) athletes per NOC is not exceeded including the 40 continentalqualifiers.

Note the "Olympic Singles Ranking Qualification" list, WILL NOT INCLUDE PLAYERS WHO HAVE ALREADY QUALIFIED THROUGH THE CONTINENTAL QUALIFICATIONS BECAUSE THEY ALREADY QUALIFIED!!!!!!

This is something I did not realize. This is how teams and the third man for the team is selected:

Also note IOC stands for International Olympic Committee and NOC stands for National Olympic Committee. Each country has their own NOC.

2. Remaining teams: Nine (9) teams (10 if the host NOC is qualified via continental quota)
The remaining nine (9) teams will qualify based on the following principles:
a) NOCs with two (2) singles athletes qualified through any of the singles Olympic qualification methods will be eligible for team qualification and will receive one (1) additional athlete quota place from the Team Quota to form teams of three (3) athletes.
b) If more than nine (9) teams are eligible for qualification, then the top nine (9) teams according to the May 2016 ITTF Olympic Team Ranking list will qualify.
c) If less than nine (9) teams are eligible for qualification, then NOCs with one (1) single athlete qualified through any of the Olympic qualification methods will receive two (2) additional athlete quota places from the Team Quota to form teams of three (3) athletes,
