I don't know if this might be the correct post to ask for this, but I want to buy tickets for the Olympics. I can buy either 1/8 or 1/4 Team Rounds, my main "goal" would be to see Timo and Ma Long, but I see there's 1 match of each round that it is played on a different day, what do you think are the possibilities of that match to be either Germany or China on those rounds?

Any inputs, suggestions or tips would be great!
Pretty high you will get one team as Germany and China are top 2 seeds so they usually shouldn't play on the same day, but beware of MT vs WT.

The men’s bronze medal might be the most intriguing as there are so many possible options to win it, unlike the women where Hayata clears all the other non chinese
Agreed on the mens, when thinking about it I also had 6 or 7 possibilities for the other 2 semifinals.
Not so sure on Hayata tho, Diaz, Ita, Szocs, Harimoto can all take her on their day
Yubin is a dark horse too, very dangerous.

Ito isn’t going to paris at all, Diaz has had some real stinkers recently, Szocs can’t challenge Hayata imo and Harimoto isn’t going for singles. As I have said earlier Shin has had some inconsistently especially in the last few WTT tourneys before Olympics where she should’ve won but didn’t (Looking at the Lagos tournament specifically)

My dark horse pick is Jeon Jihee. Wounded veteran wants a medal after being let down by her peers and association for two consecutive Olympics. I don't think she'll make it for singles (maybe 4th) but there's a chance for bronze in teams IF SYB can step up.

If theories about Hayata and Hirano are right, then the former might suffer an early exit while the latter delivers an exceptional performance. Hirano needs to anyway since she has a 2/3 chance of drawing a chinese player in the quarterfinals compared to the other 5-8 seeds who only have a 50% chance. In any case she does feel like a very shaky pick for medal contention, but there can be no more excuses on the biggest stage.

There's another table tennis grandma on the block. 58 year old Zhiying Zeng (Tania) qualifies to play Olympic singles for Chile at 58, 38 years after retiring from professional table tennis in 1986. She only started ranking on WTT in June 2023 and to qualify within less than a year in such a short time is nothing short of amazing. What's even more impressive for me is that she's a chopper at that age, and it seems like she's playing double inverted? Will be the second since England's Joanna Drinkhall and it does seem like Zeng is able to load up those backhand chops with spin.

vs Daniela Ortega at Olympic qualifiers. I think this match secured her the spot. Lots of great points with Ortega fending off smashes to save match point.

final vs Giulia Takhashi Sudamericano 2023

Tania playing doubles

Seems like she speaks fluent Chilean Spanish, I wouldn't know because I don't speak the language.

Would rather not speculate too heavily on these pics until I see the draw. Probably won't change much but the nuances might matter, especially since my current men's bronze pick is Calderano.
bronze pick is highly dependent on the draw

Thanks! I ended up getting 1/8s, both M and W are played on the same day, next day there are 2 M and 2 W games, so I guess it will be as you mentioned, either Germany or China on Day 1. Probably Germany if you take into the consideration that there's a big possibility of 4 Chinese players playing the singles finals the day before.

I think Harimoto was chilling and played with attitude I DONT CARE + more consider about shouting and blocking but right now he is in the best shape. He is the biggest threat for FZD.

Yes and no. On the men's side, I think Calderano is a clear favorite and arguably Lebrun is as well. Thr one guy who plays well vs Calderano is Harimoto, but they haven't played in a long time which might mean Calderano may have flipped things with his current form but that is unknown. But other than that, I think Calderano and Lebrun have done enough to be considered significantly better than other players regardless of the draw. The only thing is that if people like Harimoto or Jang Woojin get Chinese opponents on the quarters, they are closed out but if they get non-Chinese, then possibilities expand but I would treat Calderano as almost Chinese based on recent form and Lebrun as well. If Harimoto ends up in Calderano's quarter, then I have to do some more thinking.

On the women's side, Hayata is too far ahead of everyone. It will be hard doe her to have a terrible day in a best of 7. Not impossible but hard.
