That basically means he gave the match up but for non-medical/physical reasons?

From what I've seen, the ITTF practice is to use walkover(W/O or W.O.) to denote that the player has withdrawn for various reasons before the match has begun, such as injury, no-show etc. They use retired(RET) when the player has withdrawn, mostly due to injury, after the match has begun.

In Liu Dingshuo's case, he has been plagued by injuries since at least T2APAC in 2017.

Anyway I am very impressed the power Liu has on his BH, in fact both sides he is very strong. I like to watch him play. As I remember last time he met Mizutani it was 4:3 for Liu.

Technically speaking??
Well, to some extend he is definitely a "product" of the European table tennis ... Probably not the best choice of words, but you know what I mean. I checked wiki, but it doesn't say too much about the course of his career.

So, as far as I can decode the Portuguese, he started playing Bundesliga 2014 being about 18 years old. So Europe must have been quite influential on his game for sure, but of course I'm not trying to steal Hugo from Brasil.

Harimoto was on fire today! I can’t wait to see him against Fan Zhendong !!!

FZD may not make it with LJK in his way. From FZD's match against Niwa, I feel that FZD's BH power is slightly inferior to LJK's.
And FZD's FH-oriented style might be a disadvantage.

Yeah, not bad taking down the #1 seed. (But Xu Xin also got some constant bashing from LGL for having a dated style, nevertheless cloudwalker fared pretty well this year.)

Is it the natural course of things or was it Liu Guoliang's absence that made LIN Gaoyuan so strong ... ;) I always had the impression, he never had too much faith in that boy.

LGY was a late bloomer and lost 3 straight WJTTC finals. When you have Zhang Jike, Ma Long, Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong, that kind of player seems like a poor stepchild. LGL always admired LGY's work ethic and LGY had his breakthrough before LGL left at the marvelous 12 event. So given your options, it is more natural course.

Yeah, ML and others were quite a wall for him for the past years. No blaming (or just teasing) LGL here, but it strikes me how confident LGY is now, specially against those big heavyweights of the CNT.

He is a better player now no doubt. And this is Xu Xin not one of the others. Xu Xin has a structurally unsound game. The problem is that you have to play him often enough to have a chance of exposing it. But I am 95% sure that if Timo was on CNT and younger, he would be beating Xu Xin too.
