The training is in response for preparation at the World Table Tennis Championships in May 2011 and the Olympics in 2012. The training is beyond belief reported players in the setup. Each day there training sessions began at 7am sharp having slept or not. They would end up studying into the early hours of the morning up till 2am. In the photo above Liu Guoliang does not want his players to be lazy!
in order for Liu to put there training skills into practical analysis he setup his 8 elite first team with the non essiential key players in the squad. Without any days rest, Zhang Jike, Wang Hao, Chen Qi, Wang Liqin, Ma Lin, Xu Xin, Ma Long, and Hao Shuai, had to play matches against the China National Team 2 squad. Liu Guoliang's theory is to test the players ability after being tired. Thus, the National 2 team will try there hardest to win to prove they can compete with the first team. The results came through and only 3 players proved they could win. Wang Liqin beat Qiu Yike, Wang Hao beat Li Ping and Xu Xin beat Zhang Chao. The rest of the first team players lost and have to pay for it! Literally!
In order to keep Liu's first team motivated, players have to pay when they loose these internal matches against the second team. A reporter said Zhang Jike quoted "the training can be expensive". Currently at the time of this, Zhang Jike was ranked 3 in the world. This is how Liu keeps his players focussed.
