I think it just says a lot about the team and how well bonded they are. This is psychology 101, you can't go up against people who are used to fighting outsiders together and not get a bonded opposition. There is also likely an element of unfairness that is emboldening the players and the hope that someone higher up on the authority chain will intervene.

A lot of this can be resolved behind closed doors. They are all patriots and I wouldn't be surprised if LGL advocates they move on at some point as part of a broader negotiated settlement.

Maybe. I never took Psychology 101 and I hope you are right. Also when I say solidarity and you say well-bonded, it means pretty much rhe same thing, right?

But I have been watching the current Chinese government pretty closely for the last 18 months and they have some distinct Maoist tendencies compared to the previous decade plus. I could see some signs of it on my trip there last winter. So I am a bit worried about these players.

Will be very interesting to see if foreign players follow suit and boycott the entire tournament. Unlikely though as they've traveled all this way for the tournament and might see it as a chance to win.

More likely they see it as none of their business. It is after all an internal Chinese affair.

I was taking it lightly but now I'm legitimately scared after seeing how high the amount of capital punishment is in China. The amount of death sentences given far surpasses any other nation (in the thousands per year).

Naturally, I don't expect someone as severe as that but I hope it's not more than a light slap on the wrists for the players at least.

That would be very unfortunate but I don't think in terms of the people that the players deal with on a daily basis that they felt they had a real choice. It would be very sad if this resulted in something more than straightforward bans and LGL diplomacy.

I should add to my last comment. I am not an expert on China, I think to claim that you should speak the language and have lived there or spent a lot more time there than I have.

But, I have been there many times and beyond in-laws, I have a few very close friends who are Chinese government officials (city and prefectural level of various sorts). These are regular people, just like anyone else and they are conscientious about what they do and genuinely try to make life better for people in the areas where they work. They are my friends, like I said. In general, I never talk much about politics with them, although they have told me a bit about what their jobs entail. But, this last time, in private, more than one told me that things had changed quite a bit in the last year and a half, and they had some worries. (Some of the changes they said were good, especially a long-needed emphasis on weeding out corruption, but they also said there was a whole lot more emphasis on "ideological purity").
The number of socialist propaganda banners was increased a lot compared to previous years.

We will see how this plays out. It is hard from where I sit to imagine what all lies behind it, but it must be pretty significant if it leads to basically firing one of the most successful player/coaches in Chinese history! To me the idea that it has something to do with KLH just doesn't seem all that plausible, but like I said, I am no expert.

Asylum sounds way above the seriousness of current situation.
China is not that horrifying as North Korea

You are kidding? Were you alive in 1989, when Tiananmen Square was happening? or 1966, at the height of the Cultural Revolution? when several Chinese superstar players were compelled to commit suicide?

Those events have been systematically censored in Chinese media, right up until now. In the same way that Weibo is currently censoring this latest issue.

Same old same old, with a few mobile phones thrown in.

BREAKING News: View attachment 13601

MA Long is seeking political asylum in Qatar. He is looking to form a strong team, joining LI Ping , with the aim of winning Gold again in Tokyo 2020

I heard ML, FZD and XX were trying to decide between Sweden, France and Belgium on where to go to win the next team gold.

This really shows how China is close to dictatorship in terms of public expression rights...

When you travel there, you can't connect to either Wikipedia or Google (among many other sites that you pretty much take for granted everywhere in the west). The government blocks it.
