This years World Championships will see an important meeting in table tennis, the 2017 Annual General Meeting which will see the new ITTF president elected. There are three candidates for the position, one being current ITTF president Thomas Weikert. The other two are Khalil Al-Mohannadi and Jean Michel Saive. Whoever wins the election will be the ITTF president for the next 4 years.

Below are details for each candidates background, proposal and manifesto.

Thomas Weikert

Thomas Weikert has been the current ITTF president since 2014 and believes that his work needs to continue and that this is the best option for table tennis. Thomas expresses:

“This Manifesto sets out my blueprint for the future development of the ITTF and global Table Tennis. I believe it builds on the achievements that have been accomplished in my first term in office as ITTF President and I am convinced that by working with this vision – in true partnership with Continental and National Associations – our sport will enter an exciting new phase of global growth that sees the creation of more Table Tennis players and fans” — Thomas Weikert

Jean Michel Saive

Jean Michel Saive is one of the best players of all time reaching world number 1 status for a period of 17 months! Saive wants to become the ITTF president and even has the Belgium prime minister backing his corner! Saive expresses:

“I was one of the founders of the Club of Table Tennis Professionals in the 1990’s; I have been an active member of my National Olympic Committee since 2001, serving in various positions up to now, including as a Board member (since 2009) and Chair of the Athletes Commission (since 2013); in 2009 I became a member of the European Olympic Committee (EOC) where I currently serve as Chair of the Athletes’ Commission and am an EOC Board member; I started to work for my Federation in 2010 and became Technical Director in 2012; I also manage my private business myself” — Jean Michel Saive

Well Weikert never played world class but he sure knows how to hit the ball. I will quote myself from an earlier post.

....Thomas Weikert still plays in the sixth highest league (Hessenliga, there is eight(!!!) lower leagues) in Germany and is probably WAAAAY BETTER than the average Joe lurking on the TTD forum. His TTR Rating is 1888(!!) equivalent to ca. 2300 USATT! Now you decide if that's good enough or not...

Another thing to know. ITTF is organized just like FIFA (for a reason). Each of the national federations that comprise the ITTF have two delegates at the Annual General Meeting (where the President is chosen) and each delegate gets one vote. There are currently 222 national federations! So a vote from a delegate from Vanatu or the Solomon Islands counts exactly the same as the vote of a delegate from China or one from Germany. All the countries get the same number of delegates, regardless of the population of the country or the number of players in the country.

One way Sharara (just like FIFA presidents) made sure he stayed in power was by making sure the ITTF showered as many resources as they could on very small national associations (for example in the south Pacific). Weikert is a crony of Sharara. Incumbents have the advantage in that the people who actually vote will have benefited from his largess. By contrast, they owe Saive nothing and probably don't care at all that he was a great player.

Note that Weikert lists this in his website announcing his candidacy:
"One World – One Game – One Level: Further implementation and development of existing ITTF development programmes. Both establishing and further developing table tennis in “small” nations with the help of the federation’s development programmes, and pushing high performance across the world......"

This announces that he will continue to pay the bribes just as Sharara did before. And so we end up with a president who thinks TTX is a good idea.

All in all, I think the odds of Saive winning are practically zero. It is very unfortunate.

I'd like to see a shake up, I'd like to see Khalil Al-Mohannadi. Good accomplishments in Qatar. His 'manifesto' is simple and can be accomplished.

Another thing that crossed my mind -- a conspiracy theory supported by nothing, but read this anyway.

This is the first time Weikert has run for election. Until now, he has been finishing Sharara's term -- as the #2 guy, he took over when Sharara stepped down. So why did Sharara step down? Maybe Weikert had knowledge of Sharara's criminal activity and said "step down now or I tell all". That means of course that Weikert has had a few years to shower all sorts of stuff on the "small associations" ensuring that they will vote for him continuously until he is a very old man. Nice work if you can get it.

The only way I will be convinced that something like this is not the case is if the election is even somewhat close -- after all, both of the other two guys are extremely credible for different reasons. And most of this ball fiasco has taken place on Weikert's watch (started by Sharara but Weikert did not improve it). The election should be close.

But it won't be even remotely close. Weikert will win by an overwhelming margin even if he doesn't get a single vote from a major TT country (with the exception of his own, since it is pretty unprecedented for a national federation to not vote for a candidate from their own country).

All three candidates probably outgun nearly everybody on this forum a the table, and Jean-Mi is obviously the biggest player of the bunch. Practically every registration of him playing oozes sheer joy of the game, and that intense love of the game, the raw enthusiasm, does count for something.

That being said, there's more to it than that. (Some would say "that's just politics", as if that were something to be sneezed at. C'mon folks, this is politics; it's about making choices beneficial to the game. About policy. Which is to say: politics.)

The ITTF has had 7 presidents. England, Wales, Japan, Sweden, China, Canada, Germany. This is not an easy position to get. There will probably not be three candidates when the vote starts.

I would bet a great deal without having seen him play, just having seen how the world works, that even though I am a few years older than Weikert, and even though he plays on a surprisingly high league team in Germany, that I would have not problem with him at the table. Don't know about the guy from Qatar (who sounds like a formidable administrator who might be good for the sport). And Jean-Mi is Jean-Mi!!

In any case, the fix is in. Make no mistake about that. Weikert will be elected by an overwhelming margin. I don't think this is a good thing, but the one thing that international sports federations NEVER allow is new blood in their leadership positions. And they organize it to make sure of that.

Weikert said it again in his report to the Board of Directors of ITTF in advance of the Annual General Meeteing where the election will be held.
