I played Jeff Lin Huang (USATT rating over 2400, was among the top 50 junior player in US at that time) in the open-tournament twice at different occasion(Grace Lin's son, she teaches in a table tennis training centre in LA, USA).
The first time I played him, he destroyed me completely, I think I did not score more than 5 points in 3 games. He is a very aggressive-attack type of player, every serves and every serves return he can attack to win a point, he will attack. I remembered almost all the balls coming back were always either on the white perimeter line of the table or very close to it and at very, very high speed. But this made me realized/ and experienced first-hand the possibility of speed and accuracy that comes with hard training and dedication that higher level players have achieved. And that level of playing becomes something that I can aspire to reach in the future.
The second time around was about a year after this, in another open division tournament, I lost to him 3-0 again but managed to get 11-8 or 11-9 in some of the games. I managed to get some rallies going by fishing the ball standing way back from the table, just block-pushing/ returning his fast attacking balls until I have a chance to attack it back or until he made some mistakes. It was quite fun! And I think I learned a lot playing with high-level players, even when I was being trashed!
