A quote from Brett Clarke (emphasis mine):

It's important to be able to straighten your arm on the backswing even if you don't always need to do it. Straightening is important against easy balls and it puts your entire stroke on the right track in general. .... That little straightening and bending of the elbow is important, even against fast balls.

In general, players tend to strike the ball too close to their body. The best Asian players are further away from the ball, allowing for greater leverage and racket head speed. Ideally, the arm should start to bend a millisecond prior to contact.

So, in summary:

1. The forearm starts to bend a millisecond before contact, so the arm is never completely straight at the moment of contact on any stroke.

2. Our goal should be to sraighten the arm as much as possible (even against difficult balls)
