Not really. The fact that he qualified for the WTTC and barely lost to Xu Xin after being up 10 -5 last game shows that he is above Timo Boll's level at the moment.

Timo could beat Lin Guoyang, but not in the first round when Lin already played some matches. If Timo played Ma Long at the first round at the WTTC, he would lose 4-0. Timo always needs some matches to get the motor going

Are you saying if ML did not win this Japan Open, he will not win any more "big title" after winning a World Champion 10 days ago? Do you know the fact that ML has never won any singles title in Japan Open despite of 5 attempts? And how come is Japan Open considered something "big" ... CNT did not send top players to play Japan Open from 2009 to 2014 and Japan Open will not be Platinum any more next year.

No, I don't think he won't. Just the Japan open is like the first tournament of the new season. Also, I think the participants matter more than the place, unless it's your 'home'. As the first tournament after the WTTC FZD can get a boost to his confidence winning this, while ML has to stress about the upcoming titles. But if ML wins this, then he also can be confident.
So while this tournament won't have an impact on who will win the next big title, it will have an impact on their mood.
