We never know exactly, Mattenet wants to have his personal staff around him, French Federation says no.
For many years now it had been well known that French Federation doesn't appreciate Mattenet. When Mattenet lost his first place at world ranking (Gauzy has better ranking now), everyone on French forum expected to see him out of the national team.

I'm disapointed that Antoine Hachard didn't played instead of Ouaiche. And I'm also disapointed for Mattenet, out of the team for non-sportive reasons.

Same as Marion Bartoli. Interesting.

I think youngsters from France deserve a chance more than Mattenet. He is hostage to his own psychology, when things go right he can play amazing table tennis and when things go bad he never managed a break through. He has reached his peak long time ago and the younger generation is far more promising from my POV...hachard ouaiche robinot brothers, alexandre cassin, can akkuzu are far better than mattenet than he was at their age.

I'm also curious on why they dont kick out lebesson, he is steady in his results yes but the future is in the youngsters...on a long term plan france must endure some painful losses with a young team (due to lack of experience) but if they stick to it, it will pay off eventually. They have the coaches (chila gatien legout) the experience and facilities/environment to produce a great team in the future

Yeah, their situation are comparable. But not totally comparable, because like most tennismen/women, the Fed Cup or Devis Cup are a pain in the **s for those players (no money, matches don't count for ATP world ranking.....), at least it was the case for Bartoli. But for Mattenet, he really wanted to play for France, it's just that........yeah without his staff around him, like in Bakku, he just cannot play good table tennis, he was always terrible with French National Team :(

Federations are strong in France, in almost every sport.....but when Federations are so narrow minded, it can end like French National Football (soccer) team in 2010 (South Africa, national shame for France......I bet they heard of it even in Groenland).

Its understandable if he desires his personall staff but if you want to call yourself a professional you must try to perform your best game, no matter the surroundings/situations around you

The chinese always expose their talents early, the swedes also. I dont know if the french federation is narrow minded I always admired France for their organization in sports so yeah maybe this is also a problem.

Same thing goes for Greece, we have produced lots of great talents in the past 20 years (because of kreanga mostly) but most of them ended up quitting table tennis and its the federation's fault because they simply didnt care on expanding the sport in Greece

If i was headcoach and i would have issues with a player's attitude or behaviour, i wouldn't nominate him for the National Team in the first place.
But nominating him and taking him along to an event like this and then limit the player's performance 'cause he doesn't feel comfortable does actually limit the whole team and doesn't make sense at all!! IMHO

And of course TTFrenzy is right, saying that a good player should ALWAYS be able to show his best performance,
BUT (!!) we're not machines or tt-robots
(although some players on the CNT seem to be getting quite close)
;)
But c'mon man, we're human beings
(at least some of us. Others are makin' strange sounds while playing, so i'm not so sure about them)
;) and we all have good days and bad days.

Knowing this, it really shouldn't be a question to give a player the surroundings to make him feel comfortable and therefore show his best performance.

Otherwise i'd be limiting my ENTIRE team's performance, which surely shouldn't be a coach's or a federation president's intention.

That's how i would see it, if i was headcoach...

Well, maybe its an economical issue. I dont know Im just speculating, maybe Mattenet's staff costs alot in that case the federation should try and provide what the players need...unless they dont care of course. Let's dont forget that the economical crisis is everywhere, 1 year ago Papageorgiou & Lagogiannis were in a search of a team for the national B league of France, their previous clubs couldnt afford them and I think some clubs in France didnt even participate in the championships for economical reasons.

The awkward thing about France is that it has produced so many talents in the past years , yet they didnt have the expected results in national competitions.

France losing to portugal & greece countries with much smaller budgets sponsorships & organizations shows that when the game is on, psychology and correct timing is what wins you the games.

Maybe the people behind the french federation do not understand that psychology team communication & team bonding is far more important than having good facilities & sponsors. Money are just a useful tool to develop and development will eventually come inside a team once they have good relations and passion about TT without any distractions

Also I definitely agree about the "we are human beings not robots" part, I was very surprised doing the comparison from Mattenet's performance in single & club matches and his underperforming with the national team. So maybe mattenet and federation dont agree in some aspects, resulting in a bad climate and underperformance of the whole team
